PostPosted: Sun Nov 26, 2006 11:58 am    Post subject: What Are The Best Settings For The WRTP54G? Reply with quote Back to top

My wireless speed and distance does not seem up to par. Can anyone help me with the best router settings for maximum wireless speed and distance on the WRTP54G? I have firmware version 1.00.62 which I believe is auto upgraded? There is no firmware upgrade icon on my router. I do see a later version on the Linksys site.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

One setting on your WRTP54G you want to check is on the Wireless tab/ Advanced Wireless Settings. Make sure the Power Level is set to "Full".

Regarding getting the latest firmware, isn't it that whenever you reboot your Vonage device, it automatically deletes the firmware inside the device... and then another signal reaches a server, asking for the latest version of the firmware?

Not so sure, but it wouldn't hurt to try

you are correct..!!!
because it has a capability to download the latest version automatically, so you dont have to worry on this thing.

I ended up chatting with Linksys and they told me to make the following changes:

1. Set the channel to 11.
2. Make sure the SSID is not as received
3. Set Beacon Interval to 50
4. Set RTS Threshold to 2304
5. Set Fragmentation Threshold to 2304
6. Okay to stay with WPA security
7. Elevate router if possible

I made the above changes except no difference with elevating my router so I kept it on top of my CPU tower. I went from about 3 Mbs to about 6.5 Mbs.

These settings are quite interesting....
So, when you called Linksys, you asked them for settings for the best router settings for maximum wireless speed and distance... I wonder what 1-5 on your list does, individually. As in, what does channel have to do with distance/speed... etc... Just curious. It's good that Linksys was able to provide you with the settings. ^_^

You select the channel because alot of electronics run at a 2.4GHz range so a different channel may allow better signal strength and thus better speeds... usually 1 or 11 are the best... I have mine on 11 but will do the rest of the other changes to my router when I get home.

My apologies for asking the obvious, but regarding item #2 - what does it mean for the SSID not to be as received? Also, is there a difference bewtween WPA - Preshared key and Radius? Still getting my hands around this whole Voip router thing. Thanks
