PostPosted: Sat Nov 25, 2006 2:00 am    Post subject: VTech IP8100 and D-Link VTA compatible? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello, I've searched the archive and didn't find the answer.

I have a single Vonage number and already own the VTech IP8100 cordless broadband phone system.

I'd like to be able to use a FAX machine with my Vonage service, so I was going to buy the D-Link VTA or Linksys PAP2. Will there be any problem with either of these working along with the IP8100 when plugged into my router? I only ask because I seem to recall that the MAC address of the VTech phone needed to be registered to my Vonage account.

TIA.

You can connect the Dlink VTA to the Vtech and it is compatible, no problem about that. But here are some issues you would have to think about.

1. If you do not have a router and your setup looks like this
modem--->>> VTech IP8100--->>>PC.
and you want to add a Dlink VTA which means your setup would look like this
modem--->>>VTech IP8100--->>>Dlink VTA
You won't be able to connect the PC to the VTA because it is just a phone adapter, you cannot connect and other device to it except the phone and where it gets internet connection...but i believe you have a router so it won't cause a problem.

2. If you get a Dlink VTA and you want to connect your fax machine to it, you would have to get a fax line since you cannot assign a single number to 2 Vonage devices. SO your single number can only be assigned to one Vonage device, it is either to the VTech or to the Dlink VTA but it cannot be both.

3. You would only register the MAC of the Dlink if you bought it from a retail store, but if you called Vonage and they deliver the Dlink VTA to you then all you have to do is install it, Vonage will register the MAC for you.

Hope this helps

Very Happy

Hi, Thanks for the quick reply.

The FAX machine is really my computer and it's used for outbound use only. So, I assume it should work fine.

Cheers.

addition on this,

you cannot use 1 number on 2 devices at the same time.

wherein if you're goin to use the vtech attached on the back is the dlink or pap2, you should still have another number for the fax machine or vice versa.

if you are confused o nthis one.
just mail me out directly for immediate response.
ciao ciao!!! Wink

I agree with dheiy on this. actually, your vtech phone doesn't even have a plug for a regular phone line and it connects directlly via ethernet. as a result, it can only be used with other vtech handsets and not any regular phones and certainly not with a computer fax/modem. If you want to use your fax/modem, then you will need to get a different adapter either from Vonage directly or purchasing one and then using the transfer feature on the website and use the new adapter. Then you cannot use your vtech.

I would call Vonage and ask them if they would send out a router/adapter instead so that you can use the fax/modem on your computer.

remember to set the baud rate to 9600 on your fax/modem. Vonage seems to have trouble with 14,400 baud.

hope this helps.

when you said that you were using your computer as a fax machine, it is already obvious that you were talking about efaxing. now, you cant make an efax work with Vonage.

this is due to the fact that efaxing works like this, your computer should have a fax modem, it uses tones to make an outgoing fax or a dial up connection to work. when you plug in your fax modem to the Vonage box, Vonage will not recognize those tones. therefore, there would be no way for us to send a fax using this method

Then why does my fax machine work just fine with Vonage? Granted that people have reported faxing difficulties with some fax machines and with some fax modems, that is no general indictment of Vonage for faxing or Efaxing.

Thought I'd report back for anyone who may find themselves in the same situation as myself.

Using the VTech Voip phone for your Vonage service will preclude you from using a FAX machine on your same number.

The VTech unit has a built-in router and, as I thought, its MAC address is registered with Vonage. Since Vonage limits one MAC address per phone number, the D-Link VTA adapter cannot be used without adding a 2nd number (and paying the monthly service fee) to your Vonage service.

I ended up disconnecting my VTech phone and I'm using the VTA adapter to connect my FAX, RJ11 phone and 5.8GHz wireless phone system with just one number. Wish I had realized the limitation of the VTech system from the get go.

Thanks to all who pointed out this limitation.

Cheers.
