Would I be able to take the Vonage box with me if I were to go to Germany, Peru, or Colombia? I know you can take it with you and use it in hotels in the USA. How about at a friends house in one of the countries listed above? This would mean unlimited free calling to and from the USA, with a USA number, if this is possible? What are potential problems if it is possible? Thanks.

Yes it is possible to take the Vonage device and set it up in those countries. You will be able to use the same features of Vonage as if you are in the US. One common problem is that the Vonage device may not be compatible with the ISP in those countries, and if Voip service is banned in that country. But other than that all you have to do is setup the Vonage device and your good to go...

hope this helps.

Very Happy

Agreed.

One of the biggest issues seems to be that many foreign internet services are DSL. It sometimes turns out to a bit more complicated to set up than the typical cable/DHCP setup.

Make sure you have a voltage adapter otherwise your Vonage router will be toast having 220 going into a 110 device.

DEFINTELY make sure you have a power adapter that can work in the countries you're planning on traveling to. Most of the countries you've mentioned use 230vAC. The older PAP2 (blue-lights rather than green) shipped with a rather nice lightweight 100v-240vAC switch-mode power supply, while all of the other adapters (including the newest PAP2V2 (green lights) ship with a bulky 110v-only adapter.

If you have a 110vAC-only adapter, make a note of the voltage and polarity, and buy a compatible 230vAC model in the country you're visiting. If you happen to have the original PAP2, you're in luck, just take everything with you and get a simple plug converter (not a transformer) to handle the different socket.

We visited friends in Bogota in September, and they have a Vonage line to keep in touch with friends in the STates. It's actually what sold me on the service. He has DSL, and the quality was no different than my Vonage. He actually has a number of extra Vonage lines for all his international calls in his business. You figure if it's good enough for business, then it's good enough for personal . . . .

Note that Colombia uses good old 110v power, no different than the States. And the same type of plug. So you don't need anything special to plug in in Colombia.

Also, I would double-check your AC adapter. Most electronics these days work on anything from 110-230 volts, in which case you would only need an adapter to convert the physical form of the plug (as opposed to a complete transformer).

Believe it or not, Vonage *can* work with dial-up connections, BUT, it requires you know what you're doing with TCP/IP, dial-up modems, and Voip. I've done it a few times in a pinch. Audio quality was passable but not perfect, more like my old Cingular cell phone than anything (without the dropped calls/no service, but that's another story)

Still haven't been able to get a satisfactory Vonage call over EVDO yet, but still trying.
