I just got a new PAP2 (v2). Since I'm living in Nicaragua and the ISP here isn't the greatest (256Kbps), I've had problems before, but not this annoying. With this unit I'm getting a lot of loud clicks, esp with someone competing with bandwidth. I've got a router providing QoS as best as I can though. Firmware is 1.00.13. Is there anything I can do to this thing to make it a little nicer. My old PAP2 never did this.

ISP: Cablenet, via cable.

Speeds should be 256kbps up and down, but there's currently an issue open with my upload being half of what it should be (around 115Kbps).

Modem: WebStar DPC2100, firmware v2.0.2r1242

Vonage adapter: PAP2v2, firmware 1.00.13

Network setup: modem -> OpenBSD box -> PAP2v2

Your packet losses are much too high. Is the "OpenBSD box" the router? How does the test look if you temporarily remove it and plug your PC directly into the modem?

Why not use a router instead of a computer using OpenBSD?

My suggestion would be to get a quality router and when you read the manual that came with the router, enable QoS for PAP2v2 and connect your OpenBSD via Port 2 of a router. I can't be sure on how you'd setup OpenBSD for QoS but my recommendation would be Linksys WRT54G.

Thanks. I appreciate the input, but we're side-stepping the issue. My old PAP2 didn't have this problem, and this one is and the only thing that changed was the adapter. What settings can we change in the PAP2 device?

The QoS is setup using pf rules. I've configured it so that all the Voip traffic has highest priority. I also use this firewall for other things, such as IPsec VPN, etc.

Thanks Steve. Yes the OpenBSD is the router/firewall/QoS. I've ran the same test with my PC plugged directly into the modem (bypassing the OpenBSD and switch) and have gotten the same results.

Dave, that pretty much says that the problem is with your internet service. I suspect that the difference in performance between your old and new PAP2s is a coincidence. If you hava a cooperative friend with a different service you might want to check the new PAP2 using that service. You might also want to run a comparison test at www.testyourvoip.com .

I agree that I wouldn't be experiencing this problem if my ISP was better, but what I'm trying to address is that the new PAP2 reacts to lost packets much more rudely than the old one did. Algorithms, Voip settings, whatever, I'd like to try something so that I'm not going deaf because of the loud clicks that the unit is making me listen to.

You might try reducing the bandwidth in your Vonage settings. I don't know if it will help, but it's worth a try.
