PostPosted: Wed Nov 22, 2006 10:43 pm    Post subject: How to Port Forward with Motorola VT2442 Reply with quote Back to top

I've read through the archive at the following link:
vonage-forum.com/ftopic15539-0-asc-0.html" target="_blank">http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic15539-0-asc-0.html

and since it is more than 60 days old, I could not continue the thread, so I will start a new post.

I am trying to forward a port (35001) for use with uTorrent. I have followed the directions at portforward.com, but their guide for this router is off enough to make it not work. I can log in no problem, using 'router/router' however, my custom rules are not visible after they are created. I can apply a regular rule no problem, however, uTorrent test still tells me my port is not forwarded correctly.

The thread above seems to indicate that using a dynamic IP address will prove successful.

My question is then: what have you all done to successfully do port forwarding with this device? Has anyone done it???

Apologize if this has been asked and answered already, (I did a quick search, but nothing useful came up)

I believe there is a bug with the vt2442 with regards to port forwarding. There was a few threads on the topic from what I remember. I don't believe there was a solution. I think people are waiting on a new firmware to fix the issue. Vonage tech support may have more info on the topic.

There is a bug with the router but port forwarding does work.. and it's really easy to do. This is what I did, and it seemed to work for me. Is this what you did?

Login to your router.
Click Advanced
Click Port Forwarding
Select Catagory User
at to bottom click the New button

enter in the info and thats all you need. when you save that it will be listed under user. Just click user and you will see the rule you just made. Just click add to activate the port forward. And click save.

So now there is a bug like he said. What happens is the port forward will save... BUT it will remove the Applied Rules after a while. All you have to do to fix it is log back in and just add it again. You dont have to put the info in again, just add it, and save.

Normally I will turn on uTorrent and see if its still on. If theres an error for port forward then I will log into the router and apply the rule again. It will be fine for the time that uTorrent is on. When I turn off uTorrent after a while it will remove the rule again.

Hopefully that will work for you.

When you make a rule does it just not save or does it save and lets you apply the rule, but doesnt do anything?

Have you tried using a different port? or maybe disable firewall if you have that on. My uTorrent uses port 48737

When I make a custon rule it saves...I can see it in the custom rule page, but I can not apply it from the main port forwarding screen. For example once I select 'user' the list will be empty (except for the example)...it is not getting added to the user list.

I have tried forwarding two or three ports, specifically 4582, 35001 and 40000. Maybe I will try 48737 (Same as you)...

Yes, thank you...I have followed the guide for the VT2442....that's where it mentions to set up a static IP address and set up a custom rule for port forwarding...

I have ditched the third VT2442 and am now using a Linksys PAP2 adapter which I was able to forward the ports for and use in my existing wireless home network.

Thanks again....
