I recently ported my telephone number from AT&T/SBC to Vonage. I intended to keep my DSL service with SBC Yahoo DSL. Problem is once my number was ported, SBC says that automatically shut off my DSL service and that I cannot have DSL service through them without a phone line through them. IS THIS TRUE? If so, why would Vonage ask who my DSL Provider is and then do this? Thanks.

unfortunately yes and i can suggest 3 options for you:

1. ask if AT&T/SBC offers stand alone DSL, if yes, get one & your number can be ported to Vonage, your DSL service wont be shut off

2. keep AT&T/SBC, get 2nd line of the most basic plan for the purpose of having that DSL connection, your Vonage line will take care of the long distance, or heavy calling

3. switch to cable internet, if theres one in your area

hope you can decide on this.

I would argue on behalf of Vonage that it is not their responsibility to tell the customer which dsl services offer naked dsl. Unfortunately these dsl services vary so much that it would be unrealistic for Vonage to keep track of those things (in fact, they keep changing their positions on whether they offer naked dsl or not).

In other words, it is in your best interest to find out about these things before hand. There were innumerable posts a few years ago about this very same problem. I would suggest that you consider the 2 options offered by che (discount #1 since they don't offer naked dsl).

Blaming Vonage on this one is a very tenuous argument at best.

And in case it wasn't clear from the other replies, this is not a technical issue. There is no question that SBC can provide DSL without providing phone service. The issue is whether they will. Some providers do, some don't.

SBC (now AT&T) definitely does offer 'dry loop' DSL service (with no phone), but it currently costs more than the option of DSL + a measured service line.

I assume that they'll soon bring the dry loop price down. AT&T has been very agressive lately with pricing esp. vs. Comcast. And, in my experience, they win hands down re: customer service, etc. And now their own Voip (ATTCallVantage) is priced exactly the same as Vonage ($25/mo.)
