PostPosted: Tue Nov 21, 2006 10:53 pm    Post subject: Motorola VT2142 vs. Linksys PAP2 Reply with quote Back to top

I have a question for the experts...

If no router is needed in my situation...and I have both the VT2142 and the PAP2... is either one of them superior to the other? Or....are they both about the same?

Thanks!
Robert

[The reason I'm asking is that I purchased a PAP2 from the internet before calling Vonage.... but Vonage sent me a free VT2142...so I've been using that. A friend of mine now wants to sign up with Vonage, so I was thinking about switching to my PAP2 (because I don't need a router but he does) and just giving him my VT2142...but I don't want to do that if I would be taking any sort of step down service and quality wise.}

Router shields your IP address from the Internet. If you don't have a router, you definitly need one. If your friend has a router and you don't, VT2142 will be for you and you can give PAP2 to your friend. But if you do have a router and you friend doesn't, then you will have to contact Vonage about transferring the VT2142's pre-programmed phone number over to your friend. After that, you can just activate PAP2.

Remember: If you don't have a router, your computer will be visible to the Internet.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Yes, I have a router...but my friend does not. That is why I don't necessarily need the VT2142.....however..... if strictly speaking about the phone adaptor capability.... is the phone adaptor capability of either superior to the other, or are the equal?

Thanks again!

what kind of router do you have? Does it have QoS? If so, then you should be fine with the PAP2. If not, I'd stick with the VT2142 since it has QoS.

Keep in mind, however, that if you got the PAP2 used, Vonage may refuse to activate it. Likewise they may be a bit sticky about activating the VT for you friend. Register the PAP2 before making the deal, and make sure it works for you. Then talk to Vonage about releasing the VT and re-activating it for you friend.

Of course your friend will need a Vonage account. When he signs up, Vonage will give him a VT2142 just as they did for you, so....

well the pap2 has no routing capability but the vt2142 has routing capability,
so if you choose to use the pap2 you have to connect before a router
but if you use the vt2142 a router is not needed
