I can't say that I know for sure exactly how long it is, but believe me it isn't even close to 100 meters. It's only going from my basement to the first floor and they're actually close to be directly in line with one another (almost a straight shot up); so my guess is that even with turns the cable can't be more than 30-35 feet (about 10 meters). I haven't checked the "phone 1" light...I'll have to check that out and I'll get back to you. In the mean time I think I'm also going to check out getting a couple of more different receptacle boxes and see if maybe I just have a bad jack. Thanks again guys, I'll keep you updated. |

it is easy to convert a small amount of voltage to a 50V...but converting the current is not...vonage power adapter is only supplying 1.4 A of current. In order for us to run a longer cable we need a voltage that will push the signal and a current that can reach the other end of the cable without affecting the frequency of the analog signal...
an ordinary PSTN phone has a live DC voltage on the wiring to sustain the long wirings--not Vonage
as you can see Vonage only consume low amount of wattage which is 4 to 8 watts. good enough to prove that Vonage device doesn’t produce that 50V and a current that can support long rj45 cables…
it is easy to create a loud ring using 5 volts of power with 100ma current... |

the Vonage device can only support 5 to 10M long cable if you want to get a good quality...beyond that, you will be having an audio isuue... |

Interesting....Vonage tech support said I should have no problem with the length that I have...they indicated it's not until 30 meters that that there may be issues. |

If your phone was working and you had an issue with low volume, noise, poor ring quality, or something like that, then we would look at issues like line length. That is not the issue here. After we get the system functional, it may become an issue, but I doubt it very much. I live in a large house and my Vonage phone is working through hundreds of feet of house wiring. |

Again, thanks everyone for your responses. Finally after company left after the Thanksgiving holiday I got a chance to try again. I replaced one of the wall jacks...the original one was the type where you wrap the phone wires around a screw and tighten it down. This time I used a type that uses a punch-down block...it would appear that was it! Woo hoo! Finally we have a phone on our main floor! So it would appear that the solution was simply replacing the wall jack...darned Occam's Razor! |

That's great! Thanks for including us in the final solution. |
