PostPosted: Mon Nov 20, 2006 6:33 pm    Post subject: silence when dialing Reply with quote Back to top

recently I have had several instances of dialing a number and getting nothing but silence on the other end. No ringing at all. Then I will hang up and dial again and get ringing and I'm OK. Then I will try dialing the number again and will get silence again. It's very intermittent.

Your problem may be related to mine. Starting last Wednesday outgoing calls to certian area codes experienced what you describe. However, in our case we have one-way audio on these calls; the called party can always hear us calling them, but we do not hear ringing or the party we are calling.

This happens only to select numbers and after working for hours with the advanced tech support team, we noticed there is no correllation between area codes, in-network Voip vs PSTN, or other number related issues.

Turns out, one member of the advanced team noticed all calls through certian Vonage proxy servers (NATed on Vonage's side) were one way, and calls through other servers are okay.

In our case incoming calls have continued working both ways, and calls to most 1-800 numbers, a quarter of cell phones, and half of other tested Vonage numbers work.

I have had the exact same problem since last about Wednesday. My area code is 617 (Massachusetts). The only other person I know of in my city that uses Vonage has been having the same problem. I have spent a few hours on the phone with Customer Support, including "advanced technical support." I have done lots of debugging with them and checked all values on everything. This issue is clearly not a personal issue. It may be fairly widespread but no one at Vonage claims to know much about it. They put a ticket into the engineers (and elevated it in priority supposedly), suggesting it may be a problem with the way Vonage interacts with local phone service (although that may not explain why vonage-vonage has problems). One tech indicated that some lines have been repaired after similar problems in Dallas and another somewhere else in New England. It looks as if there is not much to do, which brings me to my suggestion to Vonage (besides fixing this problem and preventing it in the future):

Actually post service announcements on the website! (there is a place for it, but I have not seen it used). Vonage needs to get information about problems to the right people. The techs on the phone told me that they are not told when there are these kinds of service problems. So you end up with hundreds of people calling in and wasting time debugging, etc when there's nothing to be done (it should only take a few people to get the data they need to find the problem). I understand that on one had Vonage doesn't necessarily want to "advertise" the problems they are having, but on the other hand you aren't doing much for business good will by keeping customers in the dark when they are already frustrated because the service isn't working. I would much rather: 1)receive an email notifying me of the problem, 2) actually be able to find a service announcement on the web when a problem like this is occurring, or 3)be told right away when I call tech support that there is a problem they are working on, as opposed to spending hours convincing them it is not my equipment or setup or ISP before they will tell the engineers that one more person has reported the problem. Multiply my wasted time by who knows how many others and we have nothing more than a deadweight loss on society.

Hope this helps.

I should have mentioned I'm having this issue in 303. Anyone else?

i have been encountering the same thing for a couple weeks now. i just moved as well though and i transferred the exact setup i had in my old house to my new one. i suspect that it is my internet connection - but maybe its just coincidence?

i have a rt31p2 adapter that is connected to a buffalo router running qos under dd-wrt. this setup has always been flawless. i did a few tests though with various setups, different cable modems, with or without the router and even recrimping the ends on my cable connections. the following image shows the results from the test on this forum as well as testmyvoip.com.

if i seem to be getting 4.4 MOS scores why can i never seem to make a phone call?

i cant seem to decipher everything in there....

Aside from your pause being slightly high, these scores look good, at least not call prohibitive. If you can receive calls, then it is probably not a problem with your routing, or if you can place calls to some numbers (ie toll free) then the problem is unrelated to your routing or network service. Can you place calls to some numbers? If you can't reach any numbers, try another thread. If you can, this seems like an ongoing Vonage issue that ought to be getting some more attention.

Also, my service was up for about an hour on Wednesday morning, and then the probably was back Wednesday afternoon.

yeah - the call sometimes goes through to real numbers. voice mail always works. all incoming works. when it is not working they can hear me fine, i just cant hear anything.

i called Vonage about it first and they said that they would "do a couple things" and that i should definatley notice no more problems. oh well.

i am contacting my cable provider as well to check things on the connection side.

A couple of things usually means they will reduce your bandwidth (at the cost of call quality) and move your PAP2, or whichever SIP device you have to another Vonage proxy, but these changes have proved useless to me. They do solve this for you let me know. We're still offline here.
