Short bursts when ringing - Linksys PAP2V2 hardwired device

I recently installed Vonage and hardwired it for my 80 year old great aunt and uncle. They love it, but there's one problem, about half the time the phones will ring with just a short burst. They'll keep ringing multiple times, but instead of a typically ring that's maybe half a second to a second each, they'll be very quick. Because of their hearing this makes it a little difficult for them.

I think the cause may be an axillary ringing device that my great uncle added. He was an electrical engineer/inventor, so he rigged up a transformer to his phone line, ran it into a rectifier, and then connected it to an oscillator to drive a ringer that can be heard throughout the house and over speakers outside. This always worked well when he had phone lines with Qwest, but I think it's drawing too much current for the Vonage box to handle.

I told him that he should start using a relay to sense the voltage drop of the ringing and draw the ringer power from the outlet rather than the phoneline. Would this likely fix the problem?

Yes.

Test your whole thesis before hand simply by disconnecting his ring device. If that fixes the problem, then implement your fix.

If it doesn't, you might want to make contact with Vonage technical service and ask if they can boost the ring voltage on the PAP2.

hai,
steve is right.....before u try using ur relay circuit...try connecting ur phone directly to pap2 and check whether u r able to hear the phone ringing fully........some times if there is any small damages in the home wiring u might face some problems like this....................also try using a diff phone or even phone cable....if still not working.....u can contact Tech support....
