PostPosted: Sat Nov 18, 2006 12:26 pm    Post subject: Using Linksys pap 2 in a hotel Reply with quote Back to top

I hooked up my Linksys pap 2 with the DSL line from the hotel. I activated the DSL first by paying for it. I get a blue light on the Linksys for the ethernet. I am using a cordless phone but cannot get a dial tone or a light on the Linksys showing it recognizes a phone. I tried changing the phone cord, using another phone, etc. Any ideas please. I am out of the US on vacation and need it.

Thanks,

Wy

I've travelled a few times with high speed in hotels and each time when I opened my browser on my pc I reached an 'activation' page from the hotel that I had to use to enable the service before it would work correctly. This may be the case at your hotel also. Go to the front desk and ask them to be sure.

If you have a pc, hook it up to the high speed in the room, open a browser and see what happens. I bet there is some sort of 'activation/proxy' page you need to go through. From my experience this activation expires every few hours, so you may have to repeat the procedure once every 12 or 24 hours.

Agreed. Wy, the issue is not with your phone or the cord. The phone light on the Vonage box does not indicate that it recognizes a phone. It indicates that it has connected with the Vonage server and is ready to provide phone service. When everything is working right, it should be lit even without a phone plugged in.

Thanks for your advice. However, the Linksys pap 2 does not hook into the computer. The DSL and phone go into the device. I have tried but can't get any light of phone recognition or any dial tone. The DSL was activated as it works if I put it into my computer.

We understand, but when you plug your computer into the service, do you have to go through any sort of logon or initialization procedure? And since you have used your computer with the service, does the service remember the computer's MAC and insist on working only with it? The hotel staff should be able to answer that.

When your computer is working with the hotel internet service, are you able to run the forum Voip test (menu, top left, Vonage information, Voip speed test). If not, are you able to run a test at www.testyourvoip.com (test call to Boston)? If you cannot run these tests, it's possible that the hotel service is blocking some ports.

this is a good example of why I like the vt2442 for travelling. You can plug your adapter in and your pc at the same time to troubleshoot Smile

Alternatively, you can get a cheap wired router to bring along with your pap2. I've seen some pretty small ones at my local pc store.

Follows Steve's advice, as it's bang on. If you can't run the tests, then they're blocking the ports needed by Vonage. If you can, it might be a mac address caching issue as steve mentioned, which a router would take care of if plugged in as the first device.
