PostPosted: Wed Nov 15, 2006 11:35 pm    Post subject: Stabilizing QoS rating with VT2442 (garbled incoming voice) Reply with quote Back to top

First, let me describe my problem. During some of my calls the incoming voice will sometimes skip entire words. I do not know much about Voip so I wasn't sure what the cause might be. I recently discovered the different Voip test programs and have run MyVoIPSpeed test several times over the last couple of hours (http://myspeed.visualware.com/voip/). My jitter was under 10 ms but my QoS was from 12% - 65% with no consistency.

Here are my results for the Voip speed test from this forum:

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 1725200 bps
Upload speed: 242816 bps
Quality of service: 49 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 112 ms
Average download pause: 20 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 71 ms
Average round trip time to server: 72 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 18.2 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 15.0 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.1 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 4
Estimated MOS score: 3.7

I currently have 3 pieces hardware for internet connection. I have a DI-524 (dlink) wireless G/wired router, a Motorola VT2442 and a no-name cable modem (came from ISP). Even when wiring my cable modem to the VT2442 my QoS scores are all over the place from my PC. The same was noticed when connecting cable modem to PC and cable modem -> Di-524 -> PC. I am using the "factory" settings for the VT2442. I know that my DI-524 does not have any built-in QoS enhancements.

Can I make changes on the VT2442 to improve my QoS? Since only my VT2442 has QoS features I was going to have the following configuration:

Cable modem -> VT2442 and then connect my PC and wireless router directly to the VT2442.

Should I look into other hardware to improve my QoS score? Do I want to replace only my router with one that has enhanced QoS support? Do I need to look at replacing my cable modem as well?

What's your ISP? Perhaps you should contact them and see what's going on...?

I wouldn't trust on no-name-brand modems but without knowing your ISP I can't be much of a help to you.

Sorry about not including the standard information. Here we go...

1. Your location
Sioux Falls, SD

2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
Midcontinent Communications (midco.net) cable internet

3. Upload and download speeds
See prior speed tests... Using dslreports I have 5468 / 243 (Kbps)

4. Modem make and model
Ambit U10C018

Looking for a firmware upgrade now...

5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2
Motorola VT2442 (what is PAP2 vs RT31P2?)

6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
Modem -> VT2442 -> DI-524 -> PC

Note: DI-524 is a wireless router. Connect VT2442 from LAN port to WAN port on DI-524. I am using the 90 Kb audio setting for bandwidth saver.

7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc

I seem to get calls that have choppy incoming audio. It isn't uncommon for me lose entire words. I sometimes need to have people repeat themselves. Nobody has ever asked me to repeat myself so I think the outgoing audio is fine. I think this might be a jitter issue and not QoS, but I am not for sure...

I usually get the best quality signal when someone calls me. It is not 100% of the time but it isn't uncommon to get echo or other "artifact" when dial the other party.

8. Run this Voip Test

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 702400 bps
Upload speed: 244232 bps
Quality of service: 25 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 343 ms
Average download pause: 19 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 69 ms
Average round trip time to server: 160 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 12.5 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 11.6 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.8 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 4
Estimated MOS score: 3.6

I actually did 2 tests. The test before had a QoS of over 60% but the jitter was over 100 ms.

Hello,

your modem is Docsis 2.0, so it shouldn't be the problem. I would put my money on your isp. Contact them with your results and have them investigate. Incoming traffic should not be that inconsistent for broadband cable internet. High jitter = low QoS. The max download pause of 343 ms is quite high also. These all point to poor download consistency from your isp.
