FYI, after speaking with two more tech support folks, who had me factory reset the device, disable QOS, and downgrade my firmware to 1.00.62, they finally agreed that the device was defective.
I got the new one via DHL today and the static is gone.
BTW, though, I discovered that if I put the RTP300 in the DMZ of the BEFSR41, I can't make outgoing calls. I tried this configuration earlier this week while trying to debug the static problem, figuring that it wouldn't hurt. As it turns out, the new RTP300 also wouldn't let me make outgoing calls. There's a dialtone, you can hear the touchtones as you dial, but it never rings.
Taking the RTP300 out of the DMZ on the BEFSR41 did the trick, and I now have working phone service again. Thanks for all the suggestions.

That's exactly what happened to me, and I got
Vonage
to send me a replacement, which works much better.

Its a known issue that with the latest firmware, you hear static on port 2. Is the telephone number assigned to port 2 or port 1? If its on port 2 , please ask
Vonage
tech support to switch it to port 1 or downgrade firmware.
well this is one thing you can do to resolve your issue,
because the techs they will switch your phone line to the other phone port so they can refresh the setting on their end.

If the problem really is an overheating issue, though, it can be difficult to diagnose. When I talked to the techs, after they changed any settings they had me power down the RTP300 for a little bit before powering it back up again. Of course, this always made the static go away -- regardless of which setting they had changed. They switched me from port 1 to port 2 and back, they downgraded the firmware, and each time the static went away, and the tech thought the fix was successful. Until I picked up the phone to make a call later that day, and found that the static was back.

Post subject: Similar overheating problem trashing internet.
I'm having almost exactly the same symptoms with my rtp300 with one exception:
It's also affecting my internet connection, causing the winXP lan connectivity bubble to flash on and off about 2 or 3 times a second, as well as totally thrashing my throughput.
As many have stated above, unplugging the rtp300 and letting it cool does temporarily stop the problem.
It's also interesting to note that I've also had my router for about 10 or 11 months.
I'll try to keep us posted...

Post subject: Static on your phone using RTP300
The RTP 300 runs a Linux operating system and does generate a lot of heat and requires vetilation.
Do not lay the RTP 300 flat. Stand it up with at least 1.5" of space to permit ventilation.
My RTP 300 is in a controlled environment, 68 degrees F, with 50% relative humidity & I've had no problems.
You may email me with any questions regarding placement and proper positioning in your existing network.
Whenever possible connect your
Vonage
Router FIRST -- not behind any other routers.
Let your local network run in its own ring behind your existing router.
That will eliminate the
Vonage
Router from competing with Local intranet traffic which will interfere with
Voip
.
In addendum, cordless phones, especially if you have a wireless router will continue to cause problems due to the increased number of WIFI points in your neighborhood.
