I've been a Vonage customer for about 1 year now. I've experienced poor line quality (constant humming sound), line drops, voice mail delays, and on-and-on. I'm using the standard Motorola VT1005V router. After dozens of calls to customer support a few problems have been resolved. The annoying humming sound on the phone line continues to drive us nuts. We find ourselves using cell phones just to remain sane. Customer support is tells me the problem is within our household wiring????? The problem I have with their answer is the line noise didn't exist the first couple of months. If I can't find a solution through this forum, I'm going back to MCI Neighborhood. I never had any problems with my internal phone wiring for 16 years prior to switching to Vonage. Given the new FCC charges (thay should say it like it is - More Taxes), other plans aren't looking that bad.

It's easy to prove Vonage right or wrong on this one. Unplug from the house wiring and plug a phone directly into the VT1005. If the hum goes away, Vonage is right. If it doesn't, they're wrong.
As far as never having a house wiring issue, my house wiring developed a short after about ten years. Everything was fine until then. Turned out that a cable was pulled tight around the edge of a metal box. The house settled a fraction of an inch over years, and suddenly there it was. A friend with Vonage had an issue like yours. He traced it to corroded contacts in one box. Cleaned it up and the problem was gone. |
