I purchased a motorola vt1000 voice getway yesterday and am having a heck of a time getting it to work. I have a wideband internet connection and other people in my town have the same setup with no problems so what am I doing wrong? The green light on the front blinks twice so I know the unit is trying to get its IP address but I don't know why it can't. Also if I connect all the wires up properly my internet stops working. On the back of the vt1000 the 2 ports have little lights a green and an orange on each port. The green lights are on but the orange ones are not. Anyone know what I should do here. I'm by no means a computer guy but I should be able to figire this out with some help. Thanks in advance.

Please post the technical details listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum.

What do you mean when you say that the internet stops working when you hook things up properly? How exactly are you hooking it up? What hookup make the internet work?

I have wideband service. A wideband antenna is on my house and points to a tower in town. The antenna connects to my computer via an ethernet cable to a network card. that shows connected at 10.0 mbps. With this setup my internet connection works fine.

If I plug the antenna into the VT WAN port and plug the pc port to the network card in my computer the internet cannot find server message come up when I try to log on and the power light on the VT blinks twice.

According to my ISP the antenna IS a modem and the Vonage service does work on their internet connection.

Basically I'm trying to save a 40.00 service call to have them come out and do it.
I hope this info is what you were looking for and thanks for the assist.

my upload speed is 263kbps
my download speed is 315kbps
and my ISP is the wisp.net

What do you normally have to do to log on to the service when you plug your computer directly into it? Have you looked closely at the network setup of your computer (who set it up, by the way?). Basically you need to set up the VT1000 to do what the computer does and also to do whatever you do when you log on to the internet service.

(For what it's worth, I think your ISP is a crud for not helping you with this without demanding payment. If you had been trying to configure an ordinary router instead of a Vonage device, would his attitude have been the same?)

The service is always on. All I have to do is click internet explorer or yahoo mail and I'm on. I'm not sure how to configure the VT1000 because the address the book provides and the one Vonage gave me over the phone come up with page cannot be displayed messages.

OK, that's a clue. Apparently the computer isn't configured to be compatible with the default LAN settings of the VT. That isn't surprising, since the default WAN settings for the VT aren't working with your service. Take a close look at the network settings on your computer. Are you using a static IP or dynamic addressing (DHCP)?

I'm not sure where to look for that information. I was browsing posts earlier and on said to click run and type in a code (don't remember what it was) and thaty would tell you if it was static or dynamic. Anyhow when the screen came up there were no numbers so I think that meant it was static but I' m not sure.

OK, I'm no expert at this, to put it mildly, but at least we have the same operating system. First, get your internet connection working with your PC (set the Vonage box aside). Then open control panel and double click network connections. Then double click the connection that's providing your internet service. (On my computer, it's the only one that says "connected".) Then select the support tab. What does it say on that page?
