Linksys WRPT54G Firmware update released 11/06/06. No explanation listed with the update for what it is suppose to do. Anyone updated? Any problems?

Haven't seen that one yet. My WRTP54G is still on 1.00.62. What is the new version number?

Great galloping gobstoppers! The most recent released version (up until now) was 1.00.62, and Linksys/Vonage has been on the 1.00 releases for over a year. Now they are not only on a 3. release, but the 20th subrelease of 3.1?

Some busy, busy beavers at CyberTAN...

Dunno whether to cheer, or cry. I expect, if and when I ever get upgraded, I'll decide then. LOL

That just means that Vonage-supplied routers can't take the firmware update yet. Changing the codepattern is very simple.

I wouldn't try to load anything from the Linksys site to your Vonage router, if I were you (word to the wise). If and when Vonage wants you to have it, they'll give it to you - whether you want it or not...

I wonder if this will start getting deployed anytime soon?

Yes would it not be great if Vonage would update the the routers as soon as the manufactures put out their updates why would any company still have firmware version 1.00.62 when the manufacture has 3.1.20 out. I know of admins that have gotten fired for not making updates like this. Come on Vonage hire more people so you work can get done.

Also vonages phone support stinks......... people with accents are are very hard to understand. At least Dell was smart enough to fix their mistakes why does not Vonage. My phone call to them took 6 times as long since we could not understand them and Vonage thinks that this is saving them money.

I agree on the support issue. I've talked to some great people in India, none of them working for Vonage. Wink

As to the firmware - the first question a logical IT person like myself would ask is, "before I deploy this new firmware to 200,000+ people and run the risk of doing so, what exact benefits does this new firmware offer?"

Many companies successfully run Windows 2000 today, and that is a LOT older than WRTP54G 1.00.62, which only came out mid-year this year. The companies run it because Windows 2000 does exactly what they need to do, and does not entail the risk and expense of "riding the upgrade train".

If 3.x has some new features, then implement them, of course. But Vonage hasn't exactly been shoveling out new features itself lately (no complaints - they haven't been jacking up the price either). Why waste time and take the risk of an upgrade that supports new stuff your servers can't?

Regardless of the issues between Vonage and Linksys, I really need to get the firmware upgraded. I get the following error when trying to VPN (Microsoft VPN) into a network behind one of these routers:

"The VPN connection between your computer and the VPN server could not be completed. The most common cause for this failure is that at least one Internet device (for example, a firewall or a router) between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) protocol packets. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator or Internet Service Provider. (Error 806) For customized troubleshooting information for this connection, click Help."

I had the exact same problem with another network and a firmware upgrade on the Linksys router solved the problem. In various forums I have been reading that the problem is related to the GRE protocol not being supported with old Linksys firmware.

Currently I'm on 1.00.62 and the only firmware upgrade I find is the 3.1.20 from Linksys.com that give me the "Invalid Code Pattern" error.

Just got off chat w/ Linksys and they are saying that Vonage needs to address this issue. So, why does Linksys have the firmware on their website? (no, I didn't ask this question).

... I think I'm screwed. You best believe I won't be promoting this system to my clients who want a Voip solution and VPN access.

UPDATE:

30 minutes on the phone with Linksys results in the response of "Sorry we are posting 3.1.20 on the website, but you need to contact Vonage to get the firmware updated on this device."

2 sessions of phone calls with Vonage result in the response, "You are on the latest firmware for this device, version 1.00.62. We have no idea what GRE pass-through means, you will have to work with Linksys on that."

The third session was with a Level 2 tech and when asked who manages and supports the networking side of the WRTP54G he said, " <long pause>, I don't really know." He even hinted to the fact that there might be two different firmware updates available for this device - one for the Networking and one for the Voip. I'm not sure I buy into that one.

<sigh>, calling Linksys back to speak with somebody higher in the food chain that can maybe explain to me the actual relationship between Linksys and Vonage in this case.

If you got the router from Vonage or a retail purchase of Vonage branded router DO NOT UPGRADE FROM ANY OTHER SOURCE THAN VONAGE!!!!

Most people know this but i would hate to see a noobie kill their equipment.
