PostPosted: Sat Nov 04, 2006 11:01 pm    Post subject: Mystery- will the incoming call be dead or alive? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello again. Several months ago I was complaining about an intermittent problem with our phones. It was suggested that we try several things. I bought the 5.8GHz cordless phones - still had lots of times when you can't hear the incoming call.
Then I switched power cords and have also bought brand new phones with cords (had to make sure no one could say that they were too old to work ya know)
So- today I called home and got a recording apologizing for not being able to connect the call. When I got home, I made sure that none of the cat's had knocked the phone off it's cradle. Then I also got a call later tonight that the first time it was dead. Then immediately after the person redialed - voila it worked fine.

This is extremely frustrating for us and for the people trying to reach us. What do we do next? I've rebooted everything when we plugged in the phones. I did a speed test just now and hopefully the results will be copied below...

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 6010288 bps
Upload speed: 363560 bps
Quality of service: 61 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 82 ms
Average download pause: 5 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 47 ms
Average round trip time to server: 117 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 3.5 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.3 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.0 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 0.0 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 6
Estimated MOS score: 3.9

Also, I am hoping that all the other info you might need is in the signature.
PLEASE help us get rid of dead calls! Halloween is over and the spooks should BEGONE! Wink

Your Voip test looks fine. Does it make any difference if you temporarily remove the SMC router? Is the SMC running a firewall? If so, have you tried turning it off?

steve48 brings up a good point, smc routers can cause issues with VoIP//have you tried to flip flop the two routers

put the RTP300 in front

are you using homewiring? or are the phones direct to the device?

OK, I've put the RTP in the front the last time we tried this and the problem actually seemed to be worse.
I have just turned off the firewall (YIKES()
and we are using the homewiring. If I put the phone directly to the device I only have one phone in the house working.

THANKS AGAIN!

So where are we? Did the changes improve things, make them worse, or neither?

I am unsure. I think they are the same, other family members think better- however that was the poll last night.
This morning a friend tried to call several times. She said that there was no ringing on her end, just silence and eventually a click and disconnect. On our end, the phone rang several times the first time but I couldn't race to the phone fast enough before the call disconnected. Then it rang again and when I picked up it was dead. Then they tried again a few minutes later and again my end was dead. I called them back and she explained what was happening on her end.

While this is great for telemarketing avoidance techniques it's not good for us. Smile

Thanks for all the time and help!

If I were you I would run a comparison Voip test at www.testyourvoip.com . If those results are as good as the forum test, then I'd call customer service and advise them that the adapter appears to be bad. Before you call, remove your other router, unplug from house wiring and plug your phone directly into the RTP300, and prepare to be walking through some tests with them. I think you've done all that you can do on your own.

Lord have mercy! How did the formatting of those results get so garbled up? I can't make head nor tails of it.

However, the one thing I see in there that makes sense is a score of 4.2. That's very good.
