PostPosted: Sat Nov 04, 2006 9:59 am    Post subject: Why do I need Vonage's SoftPhone to use SPA-3000? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi,
I want to use the SPA-3000 to redirect calls from and to my PSTN and Vonage's phone. After making some research I found a way to do it in an old post in this forum. Here it is:

Quote:

General

I live in Bangkok but need cheap comms to the USA. Vonage gives me a USA area code and number in BKK. Dime difference is 14 hours so most of my calls come in while I am away from my condo.

Solution A

I bought a Sipura SPA-3000 from Voxilla (unlocked, can use any provider) it’s bit like spelunking to set up but I paid for the priority support service so...

http://store.voxilla.com/customer/product.php?productid=16144&cat=248&page=1

I then requested SoftPhone number from Vonage (extra $10 per month).

I used the Voxilla setup wizard:

http://voxilla.com/spa3kconfig.php

After a day worth of plodding around in the setup page and comparing others on the Voxilla forum I finally was able to get the following working very well:

1. Calls to my Vonage SoftPhone number are routed immediately to my Thailand cell phone via my local POTS line. My local copper wire calls are $0.07 per CALL (not min).

2. From another local number in Bangkok like my office or cell phone I can call my condo POTS number, after second ring I get a new dial tone. From there I am on my Vonage SoftPhone number and can call the world on Vonage rates. A password can be programmed to allow access only when the correct one is used.

The third reply in this thread and it's by jpd

My question is what is the need for the Vonage's SoftPhone here? I don't understand why it is required to be able to use this solution. I'm not a Vonage user yet;however, I want to know what I need and what I don't before buying any product or subscribing in any services.

Thank you Rolling Eyes

It's because witha normal Vonage adapter-type account, the SIP credentials are NOT transferrable to another device, in fact, you don't even know them. With a softphone however, you can see the SIP crendentials and load them into most devices. Vonage does not provide their SIP credentials freely, as other Voip companies do.

Thanks my friend for this quick, clear, and simple response. Another thing I'm wondering about, is the sound quality and volume. Will they drop down if a call was redirected between my Vonage and PSTN lines using the SPA-3000?

Thanks again Rolling Eyes
