Hello. I can't access voicemail from my Vonage line by dialing *123 or by calling my Vonage line phone number. Both of these methods should work, but they don't. I have recently signed up with Vonage and these features appear to have never worked. I can, however, call a Vonage voicemail access number and get to my messages that way. I have called tech support. I have disabled and re-enabled my voicemail at their suggestion. I have shut off the Vonage phone adapter for 2 minutes and restarted at their suggestion. I have tried another phone since they thought the tones migght not be working right (eh? -- those same tones in a different order work just fine to call other people so why not voicemail?), but same result. Any ideas anyone?

Thank you for your help. If I can get this fixed, then I'll start tackling the "dead line" calls I seem to have three of each day.

Your SMC router is blocking the traffic. Enter its setup page and in the firewall section, turn off SPI, DoS, and H.323. Depending on the model and version of firmware these can be two or three options. Recycle power on everything and try again.

While I am more than happy to make changes in my router to facilitate troubleshooting, I don't see how disabling Stateful Packet Inspection, or more specifically disabling the anti-DoS setting will impact this issue with voicemail. Can you explain this in more detail?

Feel free to give a technically detailed answer.

More information: I have come to find that dialing my own telephone number works in getting me to voicemail about 1/4 of the time, but *123 does not seem to work ever.

You may already know this and/or be doing this, but here is what I found:

When I switched to Vonage, this exact issue was (and still is, for that matter), the only "problem" I experienced. Turns out for me the answer was:

You have to dial the *123 VERY slowly. Let me say again - V E R Y S L O W L Y!

I am still surprised by how slowly I have to dial *123 to make it work (I don't usually use *123, but can always make it work those times that I try it!

I went into the router and disabled the firewall altogether to see what this would do, and it did in fact impact the ability to dial *123 effectively. "Why?" is my big question here.

When I disabled SPI and anti-DoS, *123 works like a champ. This is repeatable consistantly. Re-enable SPI and anti-DoS, *123 fails. Consistantly. The h.323 setting appeared to make no difference but I'm not so sure it would since in my router, it would appear that h.323 is part of the SPI which I obviously already disabled when I clicked off the SPI and anti-DoS option. So unchecking or checking the box for h.323 would seem to be ineffective in producing any change if SPI is turned off anyway.

So anyway we've got a direct correlation. I'm not real keen on totally disabling safety mechanisms in the firewall (for whatever little value they may have), so I wonder if some of the DoS thresholds can be adjusted to allow for the Vonage traffic but not the traffic that is likely to be unwanted.

Now the folks at SMC weren't terribly helpful as my device is outside of warranty, but I really do want to understand the why of this. What is it about the Vonage traffic that is being interpreted by the router as problematic? Can thresholds be tweaked to allow for it?

Here are some settings that can be tweaked when the SPI and anti-DoS setting is enabled:
