many qos setups automatically put wireless on lowest priority, with Voip using a high portion of your upstream, I wouldn't be surprised if the QoS on the router is in essence turning off the wireless

Hey there,

This happens to me all the time. It has nothing to do with Vonage. It is because you have a 2.4Ghz cordless phone. These kind of cordless phones use the same frequency (2.4GHz) as wireless networks. Hence why it has no effect on your wired network.

Your options.
1) Get a cordless phone not in the 2.4 GHz range.
2) See if your current cordless phone has a button that will change to a different channel. E.g. My phone has a button you press that you can press if you are having interference from nearby cordless phones. These days intefence is caused more by wireless networks than other phones.
3). Change your channel on your wireless router. Most routers default to a channel mid range. I usually change my linksys to either the extreme high end or low end. In anycase trial and error is the only way.

Check out
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/802.11
It shows that wireless n can use 2.4GHz

Quote:

802.11b and 802.11g standards use the 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) band, operating (in the United States) under Part 15 of the FCC Rules and Regulations. Because of this choice of frequency band, 802.11b and 802.11g equipment can incur interference from microwave ovens, cordless telephones, Bluetooth devices, and other appliances using this same band. The 802.11a standard uses the 5 GHz band, and is therefore not affected by products operating on the 2.4 GHz band.
.

802.1n is also include as it can operate on 2.4Ghz also.

I have a vtech 2.4GHz phone that was specifically marketed as "WiFi friendly" and it never walks on the network. There are 2.4GHz phones that are compatible if you read the packaging but it's probably easier to just shop for a 5.8 GHz phone.

Thanks for the help. I'll try changing the channel on my wireless network and see if I can get that to work. If not, I'll go look for new phones Smile

In the meanwhile, your Voip test scores are really pretty poor. If you ran the test on the laptop, that might explain it. If that's the case I'd try temporarily establishing a wired connection and re-running the test. If the results are better, then you may be all right when you replace the cordless phone. If not, you may have other problems that need to be examined.

Vonage requires cust to have a 5.8 GHz wireless handset because if you use a 2.4 GHz it may effect the wireless connectivity of your internet connection
