Post subject: VOIP Emiratee Style
Today's Gulfnews reports the TRA is going to legalize
Voip
in December. I almost started scream "Allah Acbar" I was so happy (and I'm not Muslim). Then I read on.
Voip
will be legal only for Etisilat and Du. TheGulfnews, however, goes on to say that this will bring us lower long distance prices. Silly me, I never appreciated that the last mile was the reason why my international long distance cost so much but it had to be something. After all, the international wholesale rate for terminating calls to the US and UK is well under one US cent a minute yet I am paying close to 70 US cents a minute for my call. There had to be some reason for this. Not I undersand that it must be the cost of running the call over copper to my home. But wait, intra-UAE calls are cheap. Let me think a little harder on this one.
Hmm... The cost must have been the price of running my call from my local switching station to their international switch. I guess the only international switch for this country is in the Liwa oasis and that running my call over
Voip
there rather than using standard telecommunication compresssion technology would save them a bundle. That must be it.
Anyway, I'm looking for forward to Etisilat or Dhu offering me an unlimited calling plan to North America for 100dhms a month. Cough, cough, cough.
