I am a Vonage customer and I just got a call from someone claiming that I called them on their cell phone twice in the last 15 minutes.
I had not called anyone for the last 4 hours and I was surprised that they would make such a claim.

I have heard about a Voip hack that allows people to call other people long distance on their land lines for free. I was wondering if anyone is abusing my Vonage account to make long distance calls.

first, i would check your call logs on the web account to see if there has been any outbound calls to those people claiming to have gotten a call from the number.

second, just confirm the number that is calling them, if it is, then you should call Vonage to make sure that the number really belongs to the Vonage service.

There are plenty of websites that offer a "spoof caller id" service where they can put any number to show up on the caller ids outbound calls.

everything should be on your web account....
you can actually view every call that you made, and if it is logged in there, ask somebody in your household you the **** made the call. Lol

I have already called Vonage and also checked my account but there is nothing in the records.
The guy who called back did say that the calls came from my Vonage number.
There is only one phone that is hooked up to the Vonage service and no one else could have made the call.

The Vonage tech said that the number spoofing was probably the cause.

I will wait and see if it happens again.

juat login to your web account and try to check your calls.. If it happens again, you do report it to a tech from Vonage and make sure that they do something about it.. Wink

If you are indeed the victim of a Caller ID spoofing program, there's little we (as Vonage techs) can do about it. If we don't see it on our records or anywhere on the customer's account, it didn't happen according to the evidence. So the best we could offer is changing the phone number, phone the person who called and tell them to file a police report so they can subpoena the technical call records to locate the spoofer, or cancel the service. There's honestly not much we can to on our end to try and locate whomever is doing this. So please, don't just leave it up to the techs to figure it out.

I too had a single incident of 2 calls from someone in MO. saying they were returning a call to their cell from one of my Vonage numbers (that I only use as a fax in AR).

I checked my logs and nothing indicated a call from MY number to anyone during that month. Only the inbound from that cell number. I looked the cell number up (as I work for the wireless network company this person was on). In deed....the were 2 inbounds to that cell from my Vonage number and the cell owner was verified as who they said they were.

I turned the incident over to our "Loss Prevention" for investigation. Should I get more information returned, I'll pass along...

I have a feeling this has something to do with a hack/scam going around that the companies still don't know about.

Unfortunately there is little I can do. I doubt that the police would do anything or be willing to do anything as they have their hands full with other crimes.

Vonage should take active roll in this and work with other communication companies to figure this out. Instead of just simply saying that there is nothing that they can do. Real people are being victimized here with real consequences.

In the mean time since you have access to internal information through your position and have people that listen to you, you have a unique way of finding out what is going on.

This can happen if someone had that number before and transferred it out. do you successfully recieve calls from the PSTN? (Calls that are not Vonage to Vonage)
