What make and model of Cable modem do you have.

For optimum efficiency you should have a modem with DOCSIS 2.0 firmware.

And, if you are using 2.4Ghz cordless phones there could be interference with the WRT54G.

Have you tried a standard corded phone to see if the problem persists?

Thanks for the reply. Here are the answers to your questions.

Motorla Surfboard Model #SB5120

I do have 2.4Ghz cordless phones. I have not tried a standard corded phone, but will do so.

That is an excellent modem and has DOCSIS 2.0, as well as dual EDMA cability for speeds up to 30Mbps full duplex.

If that doesn't do it, we should investigate the fact that your round trip time is pretty high. To do that, take both the Linksys and the Motorola out of the setup and re-run the Voip test. Post that data here. Also, plug the VT2442 directly into the modem and see what kind of phone service you get that way.

Another thing to check is the firmware version of the WRTP54G. If it is not 1.00.62, then you need to get that upgraded.

Unless I'm mistaken the OPs Vonage box is a Motorola VT2442.

OK, after an unexpected trip out of town I finally got a chance to try a standard corded phone and that seemed to take care of the problem....However, it now presents a different one in that I need to have more than 1 phone in my house (currently have 1 2.4 Ghz cordless base unit with 2 additional "wireless" units)...so my next questions would be.......what type of cordless phone can I use that would not cause the interference problems?

Thanks everyone I really appreciate the help....glad I found this forum....

2.4 GHz is the frequency that is shared between WiFi (computer wireless) and some cordless telephones.

You can try switching your WRT54G to one of the "outer" channels (1 or 11), in the hope that it will get the router on a frequency that your cordless phones are not using, or you can replace your cordless phones with 900Mhz or 5.8GHz models.

Not everyone has interference problems. I run a 2.4GHz phone base a few feet from my WRT54G (using channel 11) and I've never had the slightest bit of problems. On the other hand, I live out in the woods, in a metal-sided house that makes quite an effective Faraday cage. Wink So interference from other people's gear is not much of a problem for me.
