Hello. I'm new to Vonage, but I have used Voip phones for a while now. With my previous service I purchased a Motorola SBV5220 Cable Modem and Voip adapter.

When I switched over to Vonage, everything works fine except that I cannot receive incoming calls. That is to say, they go straight to voicemail. I can call voicemail and retrieve my messages (and place all the outgoing calls I want), but I can't get my phone to ring.

Has anyone run into something like this before? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I must admit that I've never heard of a modem/VoIP adapter working with Vonage before, but I'll take your word for it. I'm afraid that only customer service will be able to help you with this one- your test results look fine.

However, before you call them you might want to check and see if it's just a ring problem. If you have a cell phone or other second phone in your house, or if you can get a friend to call at an exact set time (difficult), place a call to your Vonage number and pick it up, even if it doesn't ring. See if you get a connection. Also check with friends who have called and ask whether they got voicemail almost immediately or if it seemed to be ringing for awhile first. Also check your voicemail setup and make sure that it isn't set to pick up immediately.

When I first got Vonage, the ring voltage on my adapter was set too low to ring the phone. A call to customer service was all it took to fix that.

And, of course, you want to make sure that the ringer on your phone is on and working. (Don't laugh, it's happened <G>.)

It's not that my phone isn't capable of ringing...it's just that the call doesn't get through when someone calls. It goes right to voicemail.

I could use the adapter that I received from Vonage, but that seems redundant and problematic. My Motorola Modem/Voip adapter has a 8 hour battery back up...which is invaluable when the ligths go out..

I had used Mediacom's (my ISP) Voip service for a few months and the modem worked just fine...

It seems strange that I can place outgoing calls, but not receive them.

P.S. I called Vonnage Customer service and one person didn't understand what I was asking and the second person just said, "We don't support that modem. I cannot help you." That's how I came here.

Nope! If you're making O/B calls with a Motorola SBV5220 then they're going through your old service provider. A foreign phone adapter cannot authenticate with the Vonage system.

I/B calls to the Vonage number ring to VM, because your Vonage phone adapter cannot be found on the internet.

If Vonage sent you a phone adapter then log into the SBV5220 web interface at 192.168.100.1 and disable it's Voip adapter (and firewall if it has one) in the SBV5220. That should allow the Vonage device to work with the SBV5220.

I concur. If Vonage sent you an adapter and that's not what you're using, then you'll never receive phones calls dialled to the Vonage number.
