I just rented a space in an old house. My room has no phone jack. Several people live here. The owner, who lives here, has a wireless set up from the cable internet. He says I can use the wireless.

How do I set up Vonage just using the wireless signal?
What equipment do I need?
So far I am only using my laptop to access the wireless signal. My desk computer has no wireless interface. I do not want to use my laptop for this setup. Pretend I do not have a laptop.

What do I need to purchase? Be specific.

there's no way to connect a Vonage device thru a wifi connection to the modem, you need to hard wire it.

but you can have their V-phone and connect it on your laptop..
but the thing is...
you need to connect it on the laptop to make it running..
in this case,,,you need to turn on the laptop, always Sad

Can I use my desk computer somehow?

Why can't I use a wireless receiver to connect a Vonage phone?

The F1000 WiFi phone could be a good choice for your case - it would connect to the access point and give you a cordless phone that works in the house - plus other places that you may take it where you can have WiFi acces.

Or get a wireless USB adapter which will make your desktop wireless.

(After doing a research in CompUSA website...)

One solution you can buy is D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G730AP Wireless Pocket Router/AP.

In the bottom of the pocket router, you can flip the switch to wireless mode, which enable you to connect to an existing wireless network.

But do note -- there can be a packet loss and the quality of service may not be constant -- I mean...you may experience breakups in a phone call conversation. So for example, if you have a TTY machine (teletypewriter) that's used for those who are hard-of-hearing, hearing impaired, or deaf, you may not be able to receive clear communication via text (which translates to TTY tones for outgoing text and translates from TTY tones back to text for a response from a caller.

I've never experienced Voip communication over wireless network but you can try. Your mileage may vary, depending on how far the wireless network is and if there's any obstacles that wireless transmission will have to go through, like walls, metals, etc.

I hope I can be of any help to you.

OK, I need a USB Wireless Adapter. What is this and which one should I get? I have access to FRYs.

Once I get this I plug it into my USB port on my desktop. Then how do I hook up Vonage?

Grayson, why do I need a Pocket Router?

My response was in reference to the V-phone which plugs into a USB port and will use your cable/dsl to make and receive calls.

About Vonage V-Phone, if you want to use your existing telephone, you will have to go with a a different method of connecting a telephone to the Internet.

For Pocket Router, you don't have to have a router functionality for connecting to a wireless network.

There are 3 modes you can choose from: AP (access point), router, and wireless client mode. Having the Pocket Router in Wireless Mode enables you to use your Voip phone without a computer on.

All you need to do is plug the Pocket Router to your computer via Ethernet, configure the Pocket Router to connect to owner's wireless router, and you can have your computer turned off and still use your Voip phone with a phone adapter of your choosing, such as D-Link VTA-VR, Motorola VT2142, etc. but I'd recommend a D-Link VTA if your notebook already includes a wireless network adapter.

But if ou only have a headset with a microphone, Vonage V-Phone is the way to go.

Taylor

What are you talking about??????
I don't have a cable/dsl connection to MY computer.
That is my problem. All I have is access to wireless, but right now I don't even have a wireless receiver for my desktop. I was hoping someone could suggest what I need to purchase for my desktop so that I can then hook up Vonage. So I need a suggestion for wireless and a suggestion for what Vonage to get.
