People have tried to use
Vonage
under wireless internet access conditions. However, there are some issues that must be resolved.
1. Wireless access points work in tandem with the number of users using it. If there are 10 people using it, then it reduces the amount of bandwidth each user gets (i.e. take the mbps / # of users.) So if the wireless access point can handle the standard 11 mbps, then each user will get 1.1 mbps. Which is not bad but most cable or dsl ISPs do not offer that kind of download or upload speeds. So as a result, it will greatly reduce your bandwidth that is available to you at any given time.
2. Also depending on the configuration, it might also affect the call quality and delay you might experience.
3. Also, since you don't control which computer or devices gets high priority, chances are your
Vonage
phone calls will be treated like any other computer trying to access the internet.
4. The most difficult problem is the ability to connect your
Vonage
adapter to it. Most of them need a wired connection which means that you will need to use your laptop to be an intermediary and connect the
Vonage
router to your laptop ethernet plug.
Do a search on this forum (upper left side "search" menu item) and look up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and if you enable that on your laptop, you should be able to use your phone.
This type of setup has been utilized by many who travel alot and have only wireless connections in their rooms. I haven't tried this myself so I cannot speak about its details.
Of course, the WIFI phone would be another option though if cost is an issue, then the ICS method would be preferred since it requires no cost on your part (assuming you get the adapter from
Vonage
directly).
The reason why some have suggested using a wireless adapter is b/c there needs to be a way for you to convert the wireless signal back to a wired signal in order to use your
Vonage
adapter.
If you do the ICS method, your laptop or if you prefer, your desktop does that for you. However, the big downside is that the computer must be always on if you want to get phone calls and make calls etc.
Hope this helps.

What are you talking about??????
I don't have a cable/dsl connection to MY computer.
That is my problem. All I have is access to wireless, but right now I don't even have a wireless receiver for my desktop. I was hoping someone could suggest what I need to purchase for my desktop so that I can then hook up
Vonage
. So I need a suggestion for wireless and a suggestion for what
Vonage
to get.
OK, in laymans terms, the USB adapter gives you wireless access by whatever means you currently have access to wirelessly and the V-phone will work on your desktop. Don't know about the quality though.

Please read the first post in this topic. It explains what I have and what I don't have.
Munday5,
I did not realize that the existance of user automatically divides the bandwidth into equal slices of pie. I thought each slice of pie could constantly change sizes according to how hungry each access point was at the time.
Also, I do not want to use my laptop. I want to use my desktop for this.
What do I need to purchase to connect
Vonage
to my landlords Wireless setup. Assume my desktop computer has nothing except a hard drive.

dropframe,
I would suggest a test before you even consider using your desktop for this.
Using your laptop go to the speed test on this forum as well as the
http://testyourvoip.com/
speed test. For the testyourvoip test, you will want to select boston as your destination.
Then post your results. We'll know if it is even a good enough connection.
If your test turns out to be a good one, then you will want to double check it by running it a few more times. If it is still good, then you will want to go get a wireless network card for your desktop and install it. These cards usually have to be installed inside the desktop on one of the PCI card slots near the back of your desktop.
Hope this helps, mundy5
