After an hour on the phone with bottom level tech support, the upper level tech dude told me what I already knew: my 2 year old router is toast. He agreed to replace it. In the email that has the RMA, it says they will make deductions if I don't return it in the original box and include all the cables, manuals etc. etc. How serious are they about this? I don't have much of that stuff...

I can't speak for their seriousness of wanting all the original packaging. What I am surprised is that these only have a 1 yr warranty and then they no longer accept returns (you said that your router is 2yr old right?). So I am surprised that they even gave you an RMA. Keep us posted on what happens.

When my RTP300 croaked, I returned it with the user's manual and power pack. I didn't have the original box, and I didn't think to drop the cables in the package. They didn't complain.

No guarantees, of course, but that's my experience.

Followup:

When I received the new (reconditioned) router, I took it and the power supply out of the box and put the old router in (I left all the cables and paperwork), packaged it up and sent it on its merry way (with the RMA number). When they first sent out the replacement router, they charged my account $73. I just got notification that they have received my return and the same amount has been credited to my account.
