Hi, Colorado/Comcast Cable user. Having problems getting 2nd computer to see past the router? 2nd comp is running WIN98SE, and 1st XP (which works fine) - both are wired through the Motorola router, which in turn is connected to Comcast's modem: Scientific Atlanta DPC2100. Telephone works great as well. I believe the settings are screwey somewhere. I set the router to use static IP addresses with both comps based on their mac addresses. It sees both computers, but did I do something wrong in WIN98? I used the assign IP settings in TCP/IP protocol for the ethernet adapter on this comp. I can ping the router and the IP that I have with comcast. Why doesn't the browser work? It returns the "cannot find server or dns error" screen. I can't pull up the router config screen from the win98 comp. I must have truly missed the base on something. |

open the browser window in the Win98 box and in the address bar erase everything that is there...then type in 209.73.186.238 and see if it pulls up a website....if it does it is a DNS issue...set static DNS on the Win98 machine where you set the static IP on the NW card...comcast uses 68.87.66.196 and 68.87.64.196...or if you like you can just use public DNS servers like 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, and 4.2.2.3
you can probably ping the router because you are pinging an IP...try pinging 209.73.186.238 if it reaches yahoo.com then it is definitely a DNS issue
Win 98 probably has an issue with resolving the DNS from the 2442
if it is not a DNS issue you may want to fool with the link speed on your NW card...I am guessing that the Win98 direct to the modem gets out fine? |

Thanks for your reply. I am able to ping just about any IP address, including Yahoo, but even connected directly to the modem I can not pull up web pages. I have the home network set up, and can see the win98 machine, and communicate with it, but it's very slow. I have tried your advice inputing the dns servers, but it doesn't change a thing. I don't believe that Win98SE has a general problem with the 2442, because my old desktop ran Win98 and worked fine with the router. Don't have a clue what to check next. Thanks for any help |

depending on your ISP, the Win 98SE box may not be able to get on the internet even with a direct connection to the modem due to MAC address issues, and you are correct there is no inherent issue with Win98SE and the 2442// you can prove that by trying a different router entirely (borrow a friends for a day) then you know it is the PC itself. |
