Post subject: preparing to upgrade to fios
I currently have 1 primary Verizon POTs line and 1
Vonage
line on cable internet.
Verizon fios has finally arrived in my neighborhood, so I am preparing to upgrade my internet.
Is there anything I should do to prepare?
In particular, eventually I want to move primary POTs line also to
Vonage
. I have heard of folks having their Fios internet cancelled when they try to transfer their POTS number to third-party
Voip
.
Is there best way to avoid this hassle, e.g. keeping billing for FIOS and POTs separate? Or something else?

I can understand why this would happen. I have FIOS without a phone line and it confuses Verizon every time I call. Everything at Verizon is linked to a phone number. In addition, when I got FIOS because I didn't have a phone number they wouldn't bill me, they forced me to use a credit card.
Because of this I would suggest porting your number to
Vonage
before the FIOS conversion. If you are concerned about call quality with two
Vonage
lines on your cable Internet service then you can just forward your
Vonage
number to a new bare bones Verizon number.
I would suggest that when you order FIOS you order just the Internet service and specifically tell them that you do not want your account linked to a phone number. You may have to concede to using a credit card for billing.
