PostPosted: Thu Oct 26, 2006 3:05 am    Post subject: PBX solution + wireless headsets Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all,

I am going to try and be as brief as possible.

Here's our setup :

- 10 workstations - each requiring it's own telephone extension.
- 5 telephone numbers all assigned by Vonage
- Each workstation requires an option to switch the call over to a wireless headset if necessary.
- Need ability to record certain calls and later search and play them back when necessary
- All calls ring at secretary's desk who proceeds to transfer the call to whoever the call is for. Calls are further transferred amongst employees all the time. Employees also require that the phones could possibly be used as intercoms to speak with each other with no external call.
-Conferencing support required

My questions :

1> What PBX solution works best for us?
2> What telephones should we consider getting? Something cheap with an LCD display which shows which extension is calling etc.
3> What wireless headsets?
4> What Vonage equipment will we need?
We have a 4 meg ADSL line (only 768 up though) with router connected to 24 port switch.
5> Will we need any other equipment?
6> What Vonage plan? Small business unlimited? That's the biggest baddest one they seem to have?

Trying to be as cost effective as possible with everything.

Any and all help is GREATLY appreciated.

Search Google for "vonage business plus"

There are some resellers that offer Asterisk PBX with Vonage.

You will need to upgrade your broadband. Each call takes 90 kbps.

So Asterisk is the best option for us?

What about phones, headsets etc.?

Asterisk is probably the lowest cost since it is open sourced code. Any SIP handset will work.

In my opinion you should work with an expert to get the best solution. I would think that an IP based PBX (either Asterisk or commercial) would be the foundation of your solution.

Your workstation phones could be IP phones or soft clients on computers (if present at your workstation).

I have some concerns about your use of wireless headsets depending on the nature of your environment. I might suggest using WiFi phones with wired headsets as that would give you more mobility, but without better insight into what your needs are I can't say for certain that would be appropriate.

That is why working with someone who knows your business and can solve your problems rather than simply meet your requirements is a good idea.

Hello,

Thank you for your insightful reply. Can you recommend a good wifi handset? I use linksys cit200 with skype and it works great but it's really geared towards skype. Is there something similar for Vonage?

You can get the UTStarcom F1000 from Vonage as a WiFi phone. That works only with a new account, and only on Vonage, so that may not be what you want. You can also get the UTStarcom F1000 or F3000 from some place like Voip Supply (unlocked), then use that phone with Vonage via your Asterisk PBX - phone registers to Asterisk, Asterisk registers to Vonage.
