I am on Cogeco cable 10MB internet service and just signed up for Vonage. I bought the Linksys WRT54GP2 Wireless router which is hooked directly up to my Mac via ethernet. I have tried both an old phone and a far newer phone (both connected to the Linksys) with the same issue.

I ran the Voip speed test and it confirmed that there were no dropped packets, however it said that my service couldn't maintain a constant speed and therefore could lead to bad phone calls.

During my calls there is constant background noise and when talking to people, the call will cut out for a few seconds numerous times during a conversation.

This was hardly the quality I was expecting. Any suggestions, or is this as good as it gets?

Have you tried to pull down the speed to 50 kbps ?

(In Features, Bandwidth saver).

30 Kbps is just too low, it sound like a cell phone.
50 Kbps is just right, like any other phone, almost.
90 kbps is superbe but you need a constant speed ...

It's my opinion.

Thanks for the suggestion, just making my way through the various settings to see which one works for me. So far none of them work, and they all have the same background noise. Pitiful in my opinion. I most likely will cancel it before the end of the week if Vonage can't help me.

I just ran the nice little Voip test again just to look over things and it says that my download speed is 170kbps... that doesn't seem right for a 10MB service, especially when other online speed tests say that I have about 7100kbps. Is this test different? Anything else I should be checking?

Well, just to let you know that speed change (in bandwidth saver) don't take place right away.

it may take up to 1 hour for it to work.

If you haven't wait that long, I suggest you to try back.

Also, I've noticed the same about speedtest.
There is a web page on Vonage web site for test .... (other than the test on this forum).

But I think the first one is more accurate.

Also, take note that servers are all in USA ... that explain lot of things when trying to work them from Canada...

That doesn't sound right at all. Try it again and also try:

www.testmyvoip.com

If you have 10mbps service with cogeco, it should report around 10mbps. Unless of course you are vpn'd into your office, like I am, which changes my results drastically. If you are vpn'd in, log out before doing the test.

If you want the bandwidth saver change to go into effect immediately, unplug your Vonage adapter and plug it in again. The reboot of the adapter will put the changes into effect immediately.

However, while the bandwidth saver sounds like a good idea, it didn't work very well for me. I got annoying clicking sounds when on calls, and it seemed a little more quirky. So I switched back to 90kbps not long after.

Thanks for your post. I really don't want to go back to Bell, but so far I am un-impressed with the sound quality. The voice quality itself is pretty good, however there is constant noise in the background and both sides of the call seem to drop.

Using the test you suggested I get a 3.7 between Ontario (myself) and Montreal.

I will give Vonage a call tomorrow and see if they have any suggestions, but if not, I guess I'm sending it back.
