I've been a Vonage customer for over a year now. I purchased the RT31P2 at Best Buy & have had issues from day one. Problem: Basically the quality of the phone calls are terrible. it sounds as if I'm in a tunnel talking on my cell phone. There are even periods when I will receive a call and am unable to hear the person on the other end. They can hear me just fine - but I can't hear them. Or, while in the middle of a call, there is dead silence - again the person on the other end can hear me - but I can't hear them.

I've talked to Vonage customer support and they gave me a few things to try - plug it into a different out let away form the computer - or update firmware ect... nothing has worked. Vonage finally has told me that it's my ISP, but I have a buddy w/ the exact same router (different isp) & he has the same problems. I've even taken my router to my parents house (again, different isp) - and I have the exact same problem.

Should I just ditch the RT31P2 and get a new router? if so - what one? My concern, I don't want to spend another $50 - $100 on a router to come away with the same terrible quality.

Thanks,
AT

The Rt31p2 is a fine device. Its your internet connection that is bad.
This is the best test on the NET.

http://myspeed.visualware.com/voip
-click "click to start.."
-if button dosent dissappear, click again
-if progress bar doesn't move, update/reinstall java

if your QoS is 80 and below contact your ISP about DIRECT CONNECTIONS

if your jitter is above 5 contact ISP

if UL/DL fluctuate (run test several times) contact ISP

That test looks exactly like the forum test. I wonder if there's any connection?

I have not used the Linksys RT31P but i have used the MotoVT2442. Right out of the box the VT2442 , was easy to use and the sound quality I had experienced was way better than i expected. . If you have a router already just pick up a phone adapter. they should be fairly cheaper.

lemme get sum o dat! ha!

but there is no reason why one device is better then the other when it comes to the calls. the only differences are the physical properties (i.e. ports etc). your internet was probably great when you had the motorola but not so good with the rt31p2.

I just recently installed my parents with the VT2442 adaptor on Vonage, they have a 2mb down 256kbps up cable modem, and their service is so clear and wonderful, even when my dad is downloading old music and movies.
I have the RT31P2 with Vonage, and am on an ADSL 8mb down, 448kbps up and the voice quality is ok, but can be very scratchy at times.

I too think Motorola VT2442 handles the Vonage service better than the Linksys RT31P2.........or maybe its just cable versus ADSL, who knows!!

whats funny is they all have the same TI chipset lol so it really shouldnt matter what device you have because the core is the same.
