PostPosted: Mon Oct 23, 2006 12:33 am    Post subject: Can't get 2 phones working on one line w/splitter Reply with quote Back to top

I just got my service about a week ago and I like it so far, but what i need is for the one line to work for 2 or more phones. I bought a splitter, but does not work. I have a DLink VTA, can anyone help me please???

This is what I'm doing:

cable modem to router
Router to 2 computers and phone adapter
phone adapter has 2 lines (i had thought i could use 2 phones for one line, but turns out to NOT be the case, so i have to switch phone cords every time I need to use either phone.)

I bought a splitter, but it's a little wider than i need, so i plugged in a phone cord to an extender (female on both ends.) One end has the source cord plugged into it and the other has the splitter. Does not work. I don't get a dial tone.

Please someone help me!! I don't want to have to buy ANOTHER splitter. thanks!!

So you did connect your phone to a phone adapter (without a splitter) without a splitter, correct?

If you did hear a dialtone without a splitter, then perhaps--hmm...looks to me that "phone splitter" means splitting one line into 2 lines...

What's the name of the phone splitter and where did you get that splitter from?

I know you don't want to spend money for another phone splitter and I'm sorry I can't be of any help with if you only get a dial tone from your phone adapter without a splitter but why not try Jensen Duplex Jack Model: JT1025WH?

A phone jack rj-11 typically contains 4 wires (2 pairs) so that one can have up to 2 phone lines on a single jack. As a result, there are 2 kinds of phone splitters.

1. A one line splitter lets you use more than one phone on the same line.

2. A two line splitter lets you use two separate phones using two separate phone numbers on one phone jack.

I suspect that you might have accidentally bought the 2nd type of phone jack. If you bought it at a local store, you should be able to return it no questions asked.

I personally use a splitter #1 which allows me to have a phone near my Vonage adapter and also have the other line connect it to the phone jacks in my home so that I can use 3 phones on this single line.

Hope this helps.

Right. One of the ways to identify a type 2 splitter is that the jacks will usually be labelled line 1 and line 2. A type 1 won't be labelled like that.

Thanks!

I didn't even look at the type, I had no idea there were 2 types of splitters. Thought they were all the same. Sadly I had already thrown away the packaging before I did anything with the splitter. Was fairly cheap, but still having to shell out MORE money for this, ****. I will look at what the store has to offer again, if anything I'll head to best buy or Fry's, either of those places would have a better selection than target.

Again thanks for the help.

Oh can I still use a splitter with the Dlink VTA adapter??? Please say yes Smile

Absolutely.

I have my Vonage line hooked up to a splitter, one end goes into a telephone and the other end goes into a jack in the wall so my Vonage line works all through my house on my home wiring (if you do that just make sure your home wiring is disconnected from the telco first, or you'll burn out your adapter!!!!)

In general, you can attach 4-5 phones to any of the Vonage adapters without problems. Look in the manual for a number labeled "REN". This stands for "Ringer Equivalent Number" and will tell you the amount of power the adapter is capable of. Typically, this is around 4.0 or 5.0.

Then look at each of your phones and find the REN marked on each phone. The total of all of the RENs for all of your phones should be less than the rated REN of your adapter. Most modern phones take less than 0.5 REN, so you can put quite a few phones on a Vonage adapter if you choose to.

If you have Dollar Store or a Dollar General Store go buy your splitter there, only costs a buck...What I did and Mine works fine...
