Hi,

We are in the process of installing 30 Vonage lines in our office (15 boxes each with 2 lines).

There is the chance that all 30 lines may be on simultaneously.

We are looking for some help on the following:

1) Likely bandwidth requirements if 30 lines are all on with chat both direction in/out

2) Anyway of muting the 'line' when a call is active in order to save bandwidth when our callers do not need to be making any 'outgoing' communication? (This would be very useful).

3) Anyway of de-activating the outgoing bandwidth usage when a call is made. e.g. once it has been answered at the other end we may not need to speak for a while.

4) Any switch recommendations?

1) If all of the lines are on simultaneously you would be looking at about 2.7Mbps of sustained transfer at the default settings. At the medium bandwidth saver settings about 1.5Mbps and at the lowest bandwidth settings about 1Mbps. This is also not counting any overhead and is the bandwidth of the RTP stream alone. Also, keep in mind this number could theoretically double if everyone has a three way call going on, or gets a call waiting call.

2)No, the up/down speeds will be constant weather it is sending silence or voice.

3) Again, no. Packets start sending as soon as the call starts and do not stop until the call is disconnected.

4) You would definitely want to look into a very good commercial grade switch/router. I don't have any good recommendations on this but I am sure some of the other forum members who do corporate networking may be able to help you out here.

1. Which Vonage box are you getting ?

2. Do you already have broadband connection ? If so, you can do a test at the following site to see how many lines your connection can support:

For your switch requirements, I'd look at the Cisco 2900 and up Catalyst Series. Most of them provide functions like, auto-reenabling of errored and down ports and such. Judging by the amount of lines, I'm guessing you'll want something fairly beefy.

I have to disagree, many SIP protocols have an optionally enabled feature called silence suppression. Voice Activity Detection (VAD) suppresses the transmission of data during silence periods.

This actually creates a problem with digital phones in that the other end hears true silence instead of the typical open line on an analog phone. To combat this SIP designers created a feature called comfort noise generation that generates a small amount of white noise locally.

The only thing I can think to do would be to use the mute button to prevent unwanted background noise from generating traffic. However in my experience this leads to more problems from not unmuting than it solves. Let the hardware do the silence detection and use quality components and you should have the optimal solution.

About a year ago we had a thread on Voice Activity Detection: Turn off VAD?
And a fairly interesting looking bandwidth calculator can be found on the Newport Networks site.

As much as I support everyone elses answers I have to questions why you would choose to use 15 Vonage adapters. If you are serious I would look at the Vonage Business Plus plans and consider setting up a IP PBX.

The Vonage business+ plans do not exist anymore. The current business plans simply give you more minutes to use on the limited plan and a free fax line. You use the same adapters that the residential plans use. Neither plan will give you the SIP credentials for an IP PBX.
