Ok, I set up Vonage here about 3 days ago, and making calls is no problem. The problem is recieving them. When someone trys to call they get a loud static noise and the call never goes through. Im using a dlink vta with my netgear wireless router (wgr614). Ive tried calling customer support but theyre no help at all. If someone can help that would be great.

btw ive tried hard resetting everything MANY times.

you've already tried switching ports on the netgear? and/or the dlink vta device (phone ports)?

It sounds to me like you have an issue with port forwarding where your netgear router is not sending the signals meant for your Vonage dlink vta. Hence there is not phone calls being received by your dlink vta.

You will want to set up the dlink vta's ip address as a constant number. I refer you to pp. 8-11 on your user's guide for how to change the ip address so that it is always the same.

Then you will need to consult your netgear router's user's guide and find the section on port forwarding and forward the following ports to the dlink vta's ip address. According to the Vonage website, the following ports must be forwarded to your Vonage device:

DNS: Port 53 UDP

TFTP: Port 21, 69, 2400 UDP

HTTP: Port 80 UDP

NTP: Port 123 UDP

SIP: Port 5061 UDP (used for older Vonage devices provisioned before 2005)

The following ports are needed for INCOMING and OUTGOING Internet communications from and to Vonage devices and servers.

RTP (Voice) Traffic: Ports 10000-20000 UDP. When a call is made, a random port between 10000 and 20000 is used for RTP (Voice) traffic. If any of these ports are blocked, you may experience one way or no audio.

hope this helps, mundy5

I believe the VTA is designed to sit behind a router and not connect directly to a modem. Perhaps others can chime in but that is my understanding that like the PAP2, it is simply a phone adapter and not a router/phone adapter.

But if it is supposed to work directly with the modem then I would wonder if your unit is defective. Have you tried it with a neighbor or someone else who has a working configuration?

The VTA and PAP2 are both ATAs only. An ATA can be attached directly to the internet. A router is needed only if you want use NAT to allow several devices to use one public IP address. In fact, I had to byapss the router and connect my PAP2 directly to the cable modem temporarily to accept the settings when I used the Move-A-Number feature.

Right. So the D-link VTA should work properly when plugged directly into the modem (as the PAP2 does). The fact that it doesn't pretty much exonerates the router as our culprit.

Unfortunately, that leaves us without ideas. Clearly, if you have a cooperative friend with a different broadband service, it would be instructive to take your VTA to his/her place and see what happens when it's plugged into that service.
