PostPosted: Sun Oct 15, 2006 2:38 pm    Post subject: problems connecting 3 routers (one is wireless) Reply with quote Back to top

I have 3 routers at my home office.
2 routers are Vonage routers (one motorola one linksys) which i use for 3 phones. the third router has wireless as well (D-link).
altogether i have 4 computers to connect and one which connect wireless.
i tried connecting first the wireless router directly to the modem and then connected the other 2 routers to the first one from it's LAN ports to the other routers wan ports. i then tried connecting the computers to the other 2 routers but had no internet connection.

as for now i am working with only 2 routers and when i need wireless i swap one of the routers, this is problematic because then i don't have all my phones.

could someone please give me advice on how to do this properly?
thanks.

You might get more help with this if you post it in the Voip forum. That said, there is nothing wrong with the configuration you originally described- one router connected to the modem and two others connected to it. Please give us more details. What routers exactly are you using and how are they cabled together when they don't work? Likewise, how do you have two routers hooked together that do work? Are you using DHCP throughout?

One problem to avoid is having the same address range on both the WAN and LAN side of a router. It's easy for this to happen when you use the same brand and the defaults are used. For example, a Motorola VT2442 uses 192.168.15.x as the address range on its LAN side as the default. Plug the WAN port of one VT2442 into the LAN side of another, and that first one will have the same address range on both sides, leading to issues. It can also happen between brands if they've chosen the same defaults.

Hi Steve,

thanks for the reply. i will post the message on the Voip forum as well.
I'm afraid i am not to knowlagable in networking.
i do not not what DHCP is and i do not know how to change the default range.
hopefully a friend of my will come and help me set this up but that wont be until next week. i was hoping that i could solve the problem by myself since it would save me so much trouble if everything worked.

Multiple routers could giveoyu major headaches... In my previous life I did a lot of hardcore network installs... the most common issues were dhcp overlap with multiple routers, routers fighting for nat control, etc.

Pick ONE router to do DHCP/NAT duties. turn NAT/DHCP off on all other routers, for each client attached to the network, have them fill in the dhcp/gateway fields with the ip address of the router that is performing nat/dhcp duties. Bind all necessary ports (53/10000-20000, etc... forgot all the ports) to the Voip box. This should take care of your problem.

Mind if I ask why you're using three routers? If your running out of ethernet ports, just get a switch. I have a belkin pre-n router with only four ports, and it's handling six computers (two wireless), network fax, three network printers, and my pap-2 Voip box.
