PostPosted: Sat Oct 14, 2006 1:40 pm    Post subject: QoS and BEFSR81 Link Sys router Reply with quote Back to top

I'm not yet signed up for Vonage - probably will get the free D-Link ATA adapter. Once that is plugged into my router, would the QoS have to be enabled using the my router's interface for this device (meaning the phone adapter) immediately, or, if after testing out and if I am getting sub-par quality on the calls, then only after trouble enable the QoS on the router?

Does enabling the QoS on the router helps the quality of the call and/or connection?

Thanks

I just looked up your router's users guide. To answer your question, yes, you will want to check out the connecting as it is and if you get call quality issues, it's best to enable QoS. For your router, BEFSR81, the easiest way looks like enabling QoS through the port #, it says that it has priority for ports 1-4 in your LAN, so I would connect your Vonage adapter on one of the lower port numbers. Also, you might want to consider the port forwarding settings for your BEF router.

Basically what QoS is all about is which connection gets the priority. So it basically helps with the call quality since it will give your phone adapter highest priority over all the other connections (i.e. other computers, tivo, directtv, etc).

But in my experience, unless you use an intensive application like bittorrent, you will experience little call quality problems. Of course, this is assuming that your ISP offers a good quality connection. You can set up the best configuration but without a good ISP, your call quality will still be poor.

Thanks. I'll test first, then only if I have problems, roll out enabling QoS. The router can also direct QoS to a specific MAC address, which is probably how I'm going to do it if I need to - my only concern about rolling out QoS is if I'm going to make the internet connection slower for other users on the network, if QoS is done. My ISP is comcast, and according to the tests at the Vonage web site, I'm getting like 90% effectiveness with uploads in the 360's. So I should be OK on the internet connection end.

Whoever started this forum, many thanks. Answers are much faster here.

yes, when the phone call is in progress, it will slow down other internet users who use significant bandwidth. It will most likely be unchanged for those simply browsing the web.

Alternatively, if you don't trust your router's QoS abilities, you can go with one of the Vonage routers.. like the vt2442 or vt2142, and just put it up front and everything else behind it. The vt series will automatically prioritize Voip packets over other network traffic, thereby relieving you of the task of setting this up Smile

That's how I have mine setup, and it works great:

cable modem -> vt2442 -> wrt54gs -> internal network of pcs.
