PostPosted: Sat Oct 14, 2006 7:48 am    Post subject: IP Vonage phones and hearing aid compatibility Reply with quote Back to top

I'm having trouble determining if the IP phones offered by Vonage are hearing aid compatible. I wear a digital BTE hearing aid. Vtech is simply awful, rather than telling me about their own equipment, they refer me back to Vonage - even though they manufacture the equipment.

I could have the whole house wired for Vonage (I'm in NJ) as one solution - but I shouldn't have to go to that expense (it's an extra $99) just because I can't get information on their phones. Additionally, I have young children in the house, and I'm hesitant on completely re-wiring the house and if I am not happy with the service, then I have to re-wire back to landline.

Are any of the phones hooked up in the stores so that I can determine in a live test if their phones will work with my hearing aid? Does Vonage have a warehouse or demonstration outlet in NJ somewhere so that I can go and actually test a unit? This issue is really important to a hearing impaired person. I really have to make sure I can hear on their units before making this plunge to go Vonage.

Thanks.

Do you using a cordless phone that you like now ? If so, just get the Vonage phone adapter to use with the cordless of your choice.

The sound quality will also depend on the quality of your broadband. Do this test:

I do have a cordless phone (vtech 5.Cool w/ 4 handsets, but these are used by the hearing members of my family - this phone is not hearing aid compatible (anything basically made by vtech is horrible for that purpose). I have a special phone that plugs directly into a wall jack that is hearing aid compatible which is cordless but is not expandable (Uniden - EZ1996).

BTW - that speed test site causes IE to crash. I have done the speed test at Vonage's direct site without problems.

You could plug a regular phone splitter into the Vonage phone adapter to feed Vtech5 and your Uniden.

Are you aware of the limitations of 911 service with Voip ?

Many thanks for the reply above. A regular phone splitter will do it eh on the Vonage supplied adapter - to service both the regular phones and my uniden? That's great. I might try this then. I wanted to keep my roll-out costs down for now, and perhaps try a special IP phone later if I cannot get good reception on the phones I already have. Yes I know about the opt in on the 911. This is why I specially might try Vonage instead of some other Voip providers who do not support the E911. A family member moved to Italy for 4 years and this sparks my interest in trying Voip. That and perhaps lowering my phone cost as well. In my area, I had MCI, but now Verizon bought MCI, and my costs are creeping up. Thanks for the help. I'll come back here if I need more help setting up. I think I shall take others' advice and initially go for a temporary fresh number from Vonage and port over my regular home number only if I am happy with the service and quality.

There is nothing special about the Vtech cordless that is provided by Vonage. It is just a ATA and cordless packaged together for convenience.

For max. flexibility, I would choose an ATA only device from Vonage, and provide my own phones and router.

You haven't signed up for Vonage, right?

Why not get a VT2142 phone adapter and buy one of the cordless phones from MaxiAids' Telephone section such as Cordless Telephone with Call Waiting and Caller ID? It's hearing-aid compatible.

I already have a router (an 8 port Linksys - the BEFSR81) that is working fine w/ lastest firmware. I think I'll try first with my own equipment. If call quality isn't good, then I might migrate over to one of the IP phones.

Thanks all for your help.

Which IP phones are you referring to ? You can't use generic IP phones with Vonage (without paying for a 2nd humber).
