The alarm system was new when our house was built (2000). We got Vonage about 2 years ago, hooked it up to the house wiring, and the panel worked fine.

About 3-4 weeks ago, our RTP300 started crapping out. The panel couldn't send it's weekly heartbeat to the monitoring service. Then Vonage sent out that wonderful firmware upgrade that killed the sound quality of the RTP300 (static). I decided to get another Vonage adapter (D-Link VTA-VR). The sound is crystal clear, but the panel still coudn't communicate with the monitoring service.

I had one of monitoring service techs come out to our house today, and after reading other threads in here, I knew some of the terminology to talk about with him (CID, 4+2, etc). Our panel was set up with CID, so I asked him if going to 4+2 would help since it slows things down. He said our panel can be changed, but it probably won't work with Vonage. Interestingly, he said that the panels work better with Comcast Voip since the call stays within the Comcast network (didn't make any sense to me since a call to India would never stay entirely within the Comcast network).

At this point I was a bit confused, as Vonage was working fine with CID for about 2 years. He said he would try 4+2 and hope for the best. It took him about an hour to reprogram the system as 4+2 (all the zones are programmed manually, unlike CID using this panel). He then ran tests of panic, medical, fire, smoke, etc. and it was communicating fine. He tripped all the zones throughout the house, and all those were communicated perfectly.

It appears like using 4+2 is the magic pill for Vonage to work with alarm systems. It is WAY slower communicating unfortunately. After tripping 6 zones in one batch, it tooks the panel 5 minutes to send out the signals. With CID, it would take less than 20 seconds.

But at least it works again.

This security provider works with your existing alarm system and does not depend on a traditional phone line. Uses braodband, cellular and phone lines to connect back to their monitoring center. The cool thing is that all three communication paths are redundant and monitored - the sytem actually sends you and email or SMS if any one or all of the three paths are disconnected. Another cool feature is the ability to remotely control and monitor your alarm system via the web or your cell phone. The price is competitive to what I was paying ADT before - in fact a bit cheaper.
