PostPosted: Wed Oct 11, 2006 7:45 pm    Post subject: Help using Vonage with Terayon modem and Linksys router Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

I am a Vonage user and having trouble getting good support help.

My calls are filled with static, and it drops packets like crazy. When I reset both modem and router, it works for about 10 minutes, then Voip is bad again, plus my internet connection slows to an absolute crawl.

Recently Vonage support activated line 2 on my router, and that worked for about 2 days before dying too.

My system: Terayon TJ715 cable modem, Linksys WRTP54G router (from Vonage), 2 PC's using wired ethernet cables (I had to shut off the Linksys wireless feature cuz every wireless phone I tried interferes with it).

This is really sad, I had to buy 2 new wireless home phones per Vonage support (using different frequency) which didn't help anyway, I had to shut off the Linksys wireless feature so my PC's have to be wired now, and still my Vonage service is awful. I cannot cancel for 2 more months so am stuck.

Could it be my cable modem doesn't work well with the newer router? Are they losing sync? Am I losing sync? Is my sync clogged??? Razz

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated...

You've given us some good technical information, but please provide the rest of the things listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum, especially the results of the forum Voip test.

Hi Steve Smile

Thank you for your quick reply. Many apologies on the omissions (and format) of my post, I guess I missed the sticky. Sad

My other info is:
1. Your location - Jackson, TN
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) - Charter cable
3. Upload and download speeds - 2.9Mbps download, 240kbps upload
4. Modem make and model - Terayon TJ715 (2 yrs old I think)
5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2 - Linksys WRTP54G
6. Setup of Network - modem -> router -> PC
7. Issue you are experiencing - choppy audio, tons of static, slow internet, etc
8. Run this Voip Test: - I have tried running the Voip test several times, nothing happens even after 10 minutes.

I am wondering if the firmware in my modem is out of date? I just replaced the new Linksys with an older Linksys wired router for my network, and it fixes the slow internet problem (but it doesn't have Voip so can't test that).

Thanks for any help. Wink

Hi, Narrow.

That test is important. Check and see if you have the latest version of Java on your system. If that's not it and you can't get the test to run, do one at www.testyourvoip.com (test call to Boston). By the way, you don't have to have a Vonage adapter in your system to run these tests. They test the quality of your internet service to support Voip, and they should run even if you have no Voip provider.

What firmware are you running on the WRTP54G? Has the Vonage setup been working properly prior to this, or is this a new installation?

Hi again Steve,

Oops, guess I had an old version of Java, now I can run the test okay (at 2nd site you mentioned - this site says my traces are expired and to try again later).

Here are the results:
(I have no idea what any of this means; I'm stil trying to figure out what "wow" and "flutter" are Wink )

Your packet discards are very high. This usually indicates a problem with your ISP. To be sure, remove the WRTP54G from the setup and plug your computer directly into the modem. Re-run the test.

What firmware are you running on the WRTP54G? Has the Vonage setup been working properly prior to this, or is this a new installation?

Hello,
just installed vt2442 and wrv54g, surfing it's a lot faster, quality on calls is excellent (both domestic and international).

cable: cox
modem: scientific-atlanta
Vonage router: motorola vt2442
network router: linksys wrv54g

I am thinking on upgrading modem to get even better results...the scientific-atlanta works fine but seems a little cheap

Long live Vonage!
