Okay, I have a few questions that I hope some of you can help me answer.

A) What are the upload and download speed requirements for Vonage phone?

B) What are the hardware and software requirements?

C) Are their any Vendor Exclusions?

D) What all Equipment do I need that Vonage does not provide?

Use this speed test to see if your connection is fast enough

As for hardware, Vonage offers 2 main choices:

- ATA only
- ATA with router

If you already have a router, you only need ATA

Of course, you need a standard analog phone

There are some threads in this forum about satellite. Do a search.

Vonage has wiring diagrams

For what it's worth, most people do not have much luck using Vonage with satellite service. As Vonalink indicated, there are plenty of threads that touch on the subject.

satellite = poor round trip response time = poor Voip performance. Anything over 100ms is going to cost you, and satellite is historically worse then this. We used to troubleshoot satellite connections from OZ at BCE and it caused me nightmares. However, that was 7 years ago, so it may have come a long way since. Use the Voip speed test and it'll give you the bottom line.

As for speed requirements, I have 7mbps down and 1mbps up, and it works great. I would guess anything less then 200kbps might cause you some problems if you don't have good QoS (prioritization of Voip packets) setup.

As for hardware, make sure your cable modem (if you use cable as your isp) is docsis 1.1 or higher. Docsis 1.0 doesn't support streaming well = bad Voip performance, if it even works at all. Vonage will send you the rest of the hardware you need.

Software? None, you don't need a pc for Vonage. Just a solid ISP with decent up/down speeds and good modem.

As mentioned above, the Voip test is the best indicator.

The best round-trip time you're going to see with satellite is about 600ms. I run a HughesNet enterprise satellite hub, and I would not use satellite for voice. If you have DirecTV or Dish Network, you know how bad you lose the signal during hard rain storms or snow... it will be just like that with voice. Wouldn't want to rely on it - especially if you ever need 911.

People use satellite only because they have no access to DSL, cable, or dialup.
