Hi,

I just moved to China and took my VT2442 with me. I have ADSL with China Telecom but can't get dailtone with my Vonage. The phone lights don't turn green at all. I did the recommended changes to switching to PPPOE as per the installation guide, but no luck.

I've got a mobile phone here and customer support call costs are horrendous. I maxed out my phone before the support rep could help me. What should I do?

Desperate in Shanghai,

Rick

If you plug your computer into the VT2442, can your computer connect to Internet ?

If so, maybe your ISP is blocking VOIP traffic.

Try searching on a search engine for:

voip blocking china

do u get solid powerlight or blinking? if its solid & still no phone light, it could only be 3 things - 1.they are blocking voip 2.u have incorrect mac address (or device versus on your accnt w/ them 3.you dnt have internet access currently (their service could be down y'knw)

bt if u get blinking green powerlight, specifically, if its blinking twice. u have to check the ip address on the command prompt - if ur getting a valid one.u can find out alot abt ur network woes by merely doing the ipconfig /all on your cmd prompt.

reply back so we can help u out.

also,as you mentioned that you have tried typing your username and password on the pppoe drop down list, did you change the keep ailve? if so, rever it back to the default and don't click anything else but save. if its still not working, try NOT to input anythign at all (meanign, revert it back to dhcp or default) and check if there's any diffrence at all

i knw it can be extremely painful to ask help overseas as it costs alot just to be put on hold or on queue so may i suggest that you exhaust all of the troubleshooting steps that you know before giving them a call.for all you know, it could be defective.

regards

Hi thanks for the reply, I've been gone a week and it's not fixed itself.

My powerlight is blinking. It's a long flash followed by a short one, and then repeats.

I tried the command prompt and it is connected to some IP address, I'm not sure what else I'm supposed to do in IP Config.

I didn't mess with Keep Alive. Does my problem have something to do with the Mac address?

Thanks again.

u can try this: i dnt know if this will work but u can try to press the reset button at the back of the von device(this would erase your username and pssword on the utility page) and then observe if it will mkae any diffrence.(powerlight i mean)

most ADSL dont require username/password - its actually kinda like PPPoA

anyway, worth a shot.good luck

Sigh, it didn't do it. I bought an international calling card, I'll have to give Vonage tech support a try. Thanks for all the help.

Any update on this? Mine hasn't worked for a while either (while I continue to pay the bill). Has it been determined to be blocking? If so, is there a way around it?

unfortunately folks i think you could try all day as i do not know a way around the issue

China BLOCKS VoIP!!

as all communist countries do

a few others that do are isreal, lebanon, UAE, south and north korea abd even if they do not completely block as in lebanons case they restrict your upload speed to 34kbps makeing vonage pretty much impossible to use

My experience in China is that China itself does not block VoIP. On the other hand, I do believe that China Telecom blocks Vonage.

Vonage works fine via China Netcom, just not via China Telecom. Also, other US based VoIP services - Including the "semi-free" ones - work fine via China Telecom or China Netcom.
