I did find a Vonage user here that has a working set (so the service does work), I've determined my modem was damaged somehow and I'll have to have it replaced the next time I go back to the US.

Is the other Vonage user using the same ISP? If not, and if (s)he's game, try your equipment on his service and his equipment on your service. You have a valuable resource there.

Any update on this? Mine hasn't worked for a while either (while I continue to pay the bill). Has it been determined to be blocking? If so, is there a way around it?

Found something similar. Internet access works, but no dialtone and no phone light on the router. Oddly, if the phone is left off the hook for about 20 minutes, a dialtone comes on, however outgoing calls don't work.

Vonage support said it was the Linksys device.

Is there any way other than replacing the device to determine whether it is a device problem, Voip blocking, or something else?

If internet access works through the device but the device can't register the line it's almost a guarantee that Voip is being blocked.

It is possible that the device is defective but this is a far less likely scenario.

Thank you for the reply,

Vonage support seemed to think it was the device, and suggested buying a new device.

Is there any way to tell whether it is Voip blocking or a hardware problem, without installing a new device?

I can't think of any good way of knowing for sure without replacing the device or testing it on a connection that you are certain Vonage is not being blocked.

If you are out of the country, and the device worked before, and your internet is still working behind the device, it is almost a guarantee that it is being blocked.

The simple way to tell if "VoIP" is being blocked is to download a free soft phone like X-Lite from Counterbeam and then sign up for a "free" service like freedigits, stanaphone, sipgate, or fwd. If those register, and can even call some free test numbers, then Voip is not being blocked.

I have been in hotels in China where Vonage was blocked but other services worked OK.

The way to tell if Vonage is being blocked is to try a soft phone account on a PC - similar to the above, but I don't think that Vonage has free trials of soft phone.

I've been using Vonage in Shanghai for the last year. Know several others doing the same.

Results are mixed and I can say may have more to do with WHERE YOU LIVE.

There are two known Shimao properties in Shanghai where it's impossible for the Vonage router to be assigned an IP address and handle Voip.

Once I moved (across the street) the service has worked remarkably well.

Having some issues as of late that I believe are more Vonage Hardware driven.

Network set up:

ADSL Modem ==> Simple D-link router (with PPOe activating all downstream connections) ==>Motorola VT1005 (set for DHCP)
