Yesterday at around 2:00 pm we had an internet outage in my area. I was confused because after I couldn't access the internet I looked over at my Vonage unit and it was green. I picked up the phone and called my wife. No problem. I tried my wife's computer. No internet. I then tried reboot and internet again. No internet. I called the cable company on Vonage and got the message "if your calling about an internet outage in your area, we are aware of it."

Soooooo....How did Vonage work? Smile

Well.... hmm. That's a good one. The only thing I could think of is that your phone may not have been on the Vonage adapter, but that's highly unlikely. This is definitely a good question.

In the past we have seen DNS outages that have the symptoms you describe. Most people check for Internet access via a domain name (www.vonage-forum.com) and if DNS is down then it appears the Internet is down.

Next time something like this happens to you, try accessing a well known site by its IP address.

Vonage devices do not typically need to do any DNS name resolution after they have been started. It may be that a shutdown of your device would have prevented it from coming up successfully, or its possible that the device even caches recently used IP addresses for use in the event of a DNS failure.

[EDIT: I can't believe I wrote "Internet is down". You know what I meant. Wink]

99.9% of the time, with the symptoms you described, Scerruti's explanation is the cause. The only other thing I can think of, and this is a long shot, is that if your ISP uses proxy servers for browsing, they could have been down. If the way you checked your Internet connection was to hit a website, this could be another, albeit remote, possibility.

I'm not to sure I'm following you. You guys did see the part where I called my cable company and they had a message confirming the outage, didn't you?

Cable companies aren't universally known to be technically competent. I can easily see a cable company describing a DNS outage or a web proxy outage as an Internet outage.

What cable company is it? Do they have a status page that you can see past problems?

EDIT:

I found the following information for a Time Warner (Road Runner) outage affecting Canton yesterday about 1PM.

Quote:
Road Runner is currently experiencing issues with the cable network. Subscribers in the affected area(s) may experience a loss of connectivity, usually indicated by flashing modem lights and/or a loss of video service. Our engineers are working quickly to resolve this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Unfortunately this is a canned generic message and does not detail the cause of the outage.

It is possible for everything else to be working except the DNS server. In other words, destination servers are still addressable by IP address, but not domain name.

Time Warner, just took over Adelphia in my area 9/1 and no, not to my knowledge.

But I do understand what your saying now.

Thanks, but we haven't become road runner yet. Technically we're still Adelphia but it will change some day.
