No dice. TWC tech came yesterday. Ran the exact same tests as the previous one and said a line tech needed to look into it... (again) As a matter of fact, he said, the line tech was already on his way and it was just a matter of hours before the problem was fixed. So far, everything is exactly the same.
Some technical details that might help others:
I consistently see 30% of packet loss at the following IP address: 68.87.207.81
When the problem occurs, the Vonage call drops and some 15 seconds later the Modem recycles. Once the modem comes back up, the call is still there... as long as the other party did not hang up on me.
Now, the modem sometimes recycles even when I'm directly hooked up to it without the Vonage box.

Third TWC technician came today, ran the exact same tests and the problem is still there. Modem signal looks OK, but packet loss is still there. A field supervisor is supposed to call me within 48 hours.
I've tried switching to DSL, and it turns out AT&T (incumbent) does not have it available in my area. My house was built in '92 so I guess they're waiting to rollout triple play and do not plan to upgrade the network for the time being. So I'm stuck with TWC.
Will keep you all posted.

Question Question Question
Sr. Technician showed up today. Same drill, same results. He said he was going to call "a guy" to ask him about packet loss, because he had no idea.
So I realized I was back to square one...
This is where it gets confusing for me.
Pingplotter still shows +/- 30 % Packet Loss at 68.87.207.81
But just for the heck of it, I hooked up my Vonage box and tried a few calls. I made 4 test calls 5, 15, 40 and 70 minutes long respectively without a single problem.
Eek
Don't understand what's going on. I read somewhere in another forum that PL is expected and normal in all networks because some devices are "capped" at a certain level and stop responding to pings and/or traceroutes. I initially thought this was completely nonsense but now I'm not so sure.
I'm really puzzled.
Will keep testing. I'm not sure whether I want it to fail or to work OK.
Will keep y'all posted.

have you tried a new ATA from Vonage? I called them issues and they are letting me try in BETA a new Motorola VT2542 for the phone side.
I dont have as severe of packet loss as you like 4% or so. But I do have poor sounding calls. You have a switch, wireless router between your ATA modem and the TWC cable modem? Just curious, I had a bad Netgear wireless router that was not working with Voip, it had a configurable firewall which is good for PCs, but not so much for Voip. changed out and problems went away until recent, right about the timeTWC bought Comcast.

reason I ask about chaning to another brand or model ATA phone box for Vonage is that units are real sensitive to MTU and will cause recycle of box or line storm on the cable modem, and neither are good. MTU can be adjusted on the units with techs help. But because a power surge and brownout can also damage circuitry on these cheap boxes, and replacing is best. keep me posted. this sr tech, a real doozy, huh.

You know I noticed same service drop of quality when Excite@home was bought by Comcast back in 2001-2002. I guess I shouldnt expect any less now.

Not sure what ATA stands for, but it sounds like a cheaper version of a Linksys Wireless Vonage box?
I have the Linksys WRTP54G hooked up directly to my cable modem, which BTW is a Motorola SB5120
No, I have not tried another Vonage box at all. What I did try a few weeks ago was taking my Vonage box to a friend's house, hooked it up to his router and it worked like a charm.
I ruled out Vonage altogether then.

Don't even get me started on Comcast. I hate them with every fiber of my being!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

It'd take too long for me to explain what happen last weekend with those rat bastards. Long story made short: No Internet service for over 48 hours straight; 6 different Comcast tech. support conversations with 6 different "explanations"; blah, blah, blah (and the problem was never on my end, either). All this meant NO Vonage Voip service from Friday morning the 20th until Sunday afternoon on the 22nd. Plus, I had an online registration deadline to meet that I was never able to. Evil or Very Mad

I will use the Dark Side of the Force against them as much as I can. The only good thing from all this? I won't be paying a Comcast high speed Internet bill until March at least.
