Post subject: Pap2 or VTA-VR
So due to a problem with my WRTP54G,
Vonage
is going to replace my adapter. I want simple and functional and don't need routing capabilities. Should I ask them for a Pap2 or a VTA-VR?
Thanks!
*Mods- If you consider this a double post please delete it. I posted a similar question towards the end of my "Good
Vonage
Customer Service" thread.

I don't think
Vonage
is supplying the PAP2 at the moment, so that makes your choice easy. If they were, I would probably go with the PAP2, only because it's been around longer and is of known quality.

They are supplying the PAP2, however they are not providing the wrtp54g anymore. It's funny, I asked
Vonage
the same question (PAP2 vs VTA) and their response was quite similar to yours:
In response to your email, either the Dlink VTA or the Linksys PAP2
would be excellent choices for a replacement device. Both are very
similar in design and function. The only real edge that the Linksys
PAP2 has, is a longer history as it is the older device.

Thanks for the feedback. The PAP2 isn't listed on their product page, so I figured they wouldn't supply it.

Post subject: Which device?
Just my two cents - I have used the Cisco ATA186, the Moto VT1005, the Linksys RT31P2, the Linksys RTP300, and I just recently picked up the little D-Link VTA. Of all of those devices, I probably liked the old Cisco ATA186 and the D-Link VTA the best, for similar reasons. I disliked both Linksys units (RT31P2 and RTP300) because firmware revisions that
Vonage
pushed down to them always seemed to introduce new problems, mostly with the audio!
I never had trouble with the Motorola VT1005, but it seemed to take a long time to boot sometimes. I love the VTA because it restarts quickly. The ONLY thing I do not like about the VTA is the web interface is quite minimal, and it doesn't allow me to change the web management TCP port to anything other than the default (port 80). Yuck. But as far as getting on the phone and talking on it, I would much rather use the VTA than ever using another one of their Linksys devices. You never know what new problems you're going to wake up to tomorrow when
Vonage
performs their 'upgrade'.
Best regards,
Russ

What he said. I feel the same way (I never used the 186, but did use all the rest).

As Steve mentioned earlier,
Vonage
is no longer supplying the PAP2, or any Linksys device for that matter in US direct. If it is not listed on their products page then they do not currently have it in their warehouse. They might have some refurb PAP2's but those would be used to do warranty swaps on existing PAP2's. If they are doing a direct warranty swap on your device, the only device they would be able to offer you was the D-Link VWR. If you were purchasing a new device you would be able to pick up the VTA.
