I agree that the Free Market has made the standard phone companies drop their prices. NOT enough for me to leave Vonage though. I also believe with other Voip companies offering the same service it has forced Vonage to NOT raise their price in the 2 years I have had their service.

Prices started dropping a few years ago when everyone started getting cell phones. Free weekends forced many phone companies to offer more resonable long distance. Now, with Voip, the phone companies have to once again offer better packages.

I recently got a "we want you back" letter from Verizon. They were offering a package very similar to Vonage - only $15 MORE per month (and fewer features). Why did they even waste the paper to offer this to me????

I'll be honest & say that I keep Vonage as an auxillary (backup) Voip provider. I buy my other lines through another Voip provider @ wholesale costs, so ~$6-10/line/month. Vonage has two big things going for it: 1) Name recognition, 2) Reliability. Over the past year or so, the basic Vonage phone service has been VERY reliable.

So what does Vonage lack? 1) Customer service / tech support. 2) Features for the price. 3) Open SIP credentials

For the mass-market, they're still in good shape, BUT, for very little money, they could take a B- phone service and turn it into an A+.

That said, compared to Verizon's landline service, Vonage is FAR better. Verizon made me change my phone number when I moved, despite being in the same zip code. Then there was the hassle of trying to reach a billing agent with Verizon -- it took 2 days of calling to get through!

I am NOT on the 500 Minute plan and I am lucky to have NOT had to call Customer Support. I have heard the stories. I have my fingers crossed that I do NOT have to make that dreaded call!

yikes, Vonage USA must route tech support calls somewhere different. With Vonage Canada they are routed to a tech support department right in Mississauga, Ontario. Never waited longer then 3-4 minutes to get someone who spoke perfect english Smile

However, the calls are indeed routed overseas during the night. Thank goodness I haven't had to call during those hours yet.

What's that Vonage number in Canada?

Southern Bell is the same way. They just don't get it. They keep offering me new package deals at higher prices to come back. They don't understand that they lost me to lower total cost. Except for Caller ID and included long distance, features mean nothing to me.

That fellow above is not the only one happy with Vonage service. I use teh Simulring feature with my cell phone number. I have had Vonage for over a year. There have been a few periods with problems, like not being heard at the start of calls, but in general, I have been able to receive faxes, and calls to both my Vonage like and the simulring number successfully and clearly.

I've had Vonage for three months and have had NOTHING but problems.

Tech support couldn't (speak English) figure out why my wireless network wouldn't work when I hooked up my two Vonage routers. It was a relatively simple fix that I was able to get from this forum. And later I found that there are connection issues with certain cordless phones, again, tech support was not able to identify this. Many other issues, not worth mentioning...

My latest issue is this: We have two voice lines and one fax line. Our oldest child reached the age where we promised him his own room so our office moved into the old nursery, which means the Vonage and dsl modem moved, too. Now our cordless phones don't work in half the house.

I called tech support, told them I had a second dsl modem, and asked if I could use it to hook up the phone lines in the best location for our cordless phones. They said it wouldn't be a problem to use two dsl modems on one dsl line. BIG WRONG! I either have my business and house phones working OR I have my internet and fax line working, but not both.

There is no other place to put my office/vonage modem/dsl modem. I am at a loss for words here. One tech suggested rewiring my house so I could plug a phone into any phone jack in the house. That would be great except for the fact that I have TWO phone lines that I need coverage for, not just one, and as far as I can tell there is no way to rewire a phone jack to accept two Vonage lines without the Vonage modem, which as I mentioned above CANNOT BE MOVED.

Yeah, Vonage is great under normal circumstances, but their tech support is HORRIFYING and their solutions for power users are NONEXISTENT.
