I can't myself, but some of the folks in here recommend the WRT54GL with third party firmware. Do a search on the forum and see what they have to say.

i'm new to all this but seeing all these diagrams and solutions to stop voice garbling/etc (when downloading and what not) is very frustrating/confusing. i wish someone would just make a GOOD cable modem that also has a gateway + router + telephone adapter built in. heck, the modem could be separate and i'd still pay quite a bit for an amazing wireless router that has packet prioritizing (ala the hawking stuff) and a telephone adapter.... nothing like that currently exists, right?

my current setup is modem-->srx something er other-->pap2 and the instant micro torrent gets up and running the people on the other end cant hear a word i say. qos hasnt done anything at all to help the problem and i just cant imagine running all these different devices just to get this crap to work. Mad

Hello Everyone,

From my experience, most of the consumer grade devices i.e. Linksys don't really offer true robust QoS capabilities. However, on a personal note that I have tried to use third part software for my WRT54G. This model comes in different flavors which you won't find out until you unbox the item. It usually indicates WRT54G or WRT54G v2 and so forth...

Anyway, here's a link on how to. DD-WRT

DD-WRT's software worked for me. My QoS worked great. My advise is to "carefully" follow the instructions given as I did (even if you get the urge to jump on to the next step without reading!)

Disclaimer: There's always a chance that you can brick your router when you do this and I will not be held responsible for your own actions.

DITO eflordel.

I would recommend a WRT-54GL with DD-WRT v.23 SP2. My advice would be to stay away from all of the other 54's since Linksys has downgraded them into pieces of crap. So, unless you can find a good used WRT-54G v 1 - 4, I would buy a new WRT-54GL and then upgrade it with the latest version of DD-WRT. As always, read and follow all precautions when updating firmware. I think that you will be pleased with the results.

The main difference is the "L" version is loaded with Linux...and of course what everyone wants... more RAM like the v4 series. It doesn't stop there. Load DD-WRT on it and you'll know the main difference. Check this link out for some reading. Enjoy!

Hello,

I have the wrt54gs version 2. How would the DD-WRT firmware compare to the latest firmware from linksys (Firmware Version: v4.71.1) which offers QoS via different methods. At the moment I have QoS setup to prioritize all traffic coming from the mac address of my phone adapter, which appears to be working great.

However, I sure like the idea of a 3rd party firmware since I'm a linux fan by nature and by career Smile

Hey Webfors,

There's clearly nothing wrong with exploring your options but proceed with caution. If you're QoS works well for you, I suggest not to mess with it. You'll be surprised with what people would actually do to get to where you're at (or should I say "we").
I've gone out of my way to install third party software such as DD-WRT on my Linksys WRT54G v5. Yes! The crummy v5 that didn't have enough RAM on it. Out of the box, it had QoS settings on it that was only as much good as a display and nothing more. It just didn't work. Out of my curiosity and some time spent researching, i decided to join the crew of WRT'ers and so I flashed my little box, applied settings as suggested with some minor tweaking, low and behold...it worked no doubt about it!

There's always a risk involved and that's solely up to you to. At first glance I wouldn't touch it...but the devil I am Twisted Evil I'd flash it. oops!

Idea Don't touch it if it 'aint broken.

DITO! Again. DD-WRT works great but when it comes to doing something that could brick your router,,, If it already does what you want it too then I'd leave it alone.
