Wild Bill,
I followed your instructions and set up X-lite. It works great at home, but when I am travelling and the hotel has firewall, I can not receive any calls and the calls that I make get cut off in 45 seconds. Is there a work around for this ? |

I apologize for the late response to your question about travelling with the X-Lite to connections with fire walls.
The Vonage Softphone account uses the following ports:
5060 - for SIP Protocol
8000-20000 for RTP protocol
Most hotels do not want to open ports in their firewall for fear of the inevitable, HACKERS.
I have been tied up cleaning up a network of an office that refused to run a firewall and only open a specific range of ports, they lost the use of all machines.
You could provide the hotel w/the ports listed, but do not expect cooperation.
You could go into your X-Lite SIP settings and change the port number from 5060 to a commonly supported range, but, my suspicion is they are blocking all port access except the standard internet ports.
However, the RTP ports will probably be blocked also.
I have had good success with Marriott and Hilton to open ports for me, but most will not.
Also, it may not be the firewall.
In some International areas SIP ports and RTP ports are blocked to prevent people from using VOIP, and there is not much you can do about it.
Regards,
DJ Wild Bill
