I have WOW internet service, and I've got a Linksys RTP300 router for Vonage. My external IP address with WOW recently changed, as it does from time-to-time. My problem is that the RTP300 is insisting on holding onto the old IP address. This is causing lots of problems for me in the way of Remote access, port forwarding, etc.

I've tried release/renew on the RTP300. I've tried rebooting it. I've tried restoring the factory defaults. I've rebooted the modem. I've unplugged them both for 30 minutes and plugged them back in. The RTP300 just will not take on the new IP address!

I'm fairly literate with networking and my equipment, and I wouldn't be here if I wasn't already at my wit's end, having already tried every possible solution. So I'm hoping someone here can help me out!

Um.. How do you know that your public IP address changed? If you are able to get online with a computer plugged into the RTP300 and if you have phone service then the RTP300 has the correct IP address. Especially if you have reset it and it still has the same address, then that is the address your modem is giving the router to use. Maybe your computer got a new private IP address(192.168.15.xxx) and that is why port forwarding, etc is not working.

I know it changed because when I'm at work, I use that public IP to remotely connect to my home computer. When Remote Access fails, I know that my public IP has changed.

I also know it changed because when I plug a computer directly into the modem and check whatismyip.com, I get a completely different IP address than I do when behind the router. It used to be 24.xx.xxx.xx, and now it's 67.xx.xxx.xx. However, the RTP300 is still reading 24.xx.xxx.xx.

I found a temporary solution by assigning a static IP to the RTP300 instead of letting it Obtain an IP Automatically, but that still doesn't answer why the RTP300 won't obtain the *correct* IP automatically.

Oh, and I no longer have a dialtone either.

Did this happen before or after setting a static IP? If you remove the static IP address does it go back the old IP and get a dial-tone? Are you still able to get online with the old IP address?How about the new one?

I've got internet access regardless of the IP setting, although it's slower than normal, I can't ping myself from outside the network, torrents refuse to download, etc.

I switched back to Obtain IP Automatically and rebooted, and I've got dialtone back (although it still have the wrong IP). I did not have a dailtone while the IP was set to a Static IP.
